{"id":2265,"date":"2016-03-07T02:52:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T02:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?page_id=2265"},"modified":"2021-09-15T20:06:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T20:06:09","slug":"hwisi","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?page_id=2265","title":{"rendered":"HWISI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After Hurricane Sandy in 2012 I decided to try to devise an index that would help me better analyze the potential damage caused by tropical cyclones.\u00a0 I developed the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI).\u00a0 HWISI is based on a 100 point scale.\u00a0 It is designed so that a hurricane with a maximum sustained wind speed of 200 m.p.h. (320 km\/h) and is as big as Hurricane Sandy will get 100 points.<\/p>\n<p>There are two components to HWISI.\u00a0 There is a Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) and a Hurricane Size Index (HSI).\u00a0 HWISI is equal to the sum of HII and HSI.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index is a function of wind speed and it is scaled so that a hurricane with a maximum sustained wind speed of 200 m.p.h.
