Tropical Cyclones<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2.\u00a0 Extratropical Cyclones<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3.\u00a0 Subtropical Cyclones<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A <strong>tropical cyclone <\/strong>is a warm-core, non-frontal low pressure system of synoptic scale that develops over tropical or subtropical oceans.\u00a0 Tropical cyclones tend to have a more circular shape with spiral bands of showers and thunderstorms rotating around the center of circulation.\u00a0 More intense tropical cyclones may develop a clear area at the center known as an eye.\u00a0 Rising motion in the thunderstorms near the center may create a cirrus canopy of diverging air at the top of the circulation.\u00a0 Tropical cyclones may be called tropical depressions, tropical storms, hurricanes or typhoons depending on their intensity and location.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">An <strong>extratropical cyclone <\/strong>is a cold-core synoptic scale low pressure system whose primary source of energy is baroclinic (the difference between warm and cold air).\u00a0 It will often be associated with fronts.\u00a0 The development of an extratropical cyclone is often linked to a trough in the middle and upper troposphere.\u00a0 Extratropical cyclones are the primary large scale storm systems in the middle and higher latitudes.\u00a0 They may also be called mid-latitude cyclones.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <strong>subtropical cyclone <\/strong>is a low pressure system that develops over subtropical oceans and initially has a non-tropical circulation structure, but it exhibits some elements of the cloud patterns associated with tropical cyclones.\u00a0 It is often considered a hybrid system with some characteristics of tropical cyclones and some characteristics of extratropical cyclones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is important to remember that these types are just names meteorologists use to characterize low pressure systems.\u00a0 A low pressure system may change structure as it moves from one environment to another and meteorologists may change its type.\u00a0 For example, often when a tropical cyclone moves to a higher latitude and a colder environment it makes a transition to an extratropical cyclone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential Tropical Cyclone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential Tropical Cyclone (PTC) <\/strong>is a designation used by the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).\u00a0 NHC designates a system as a <strong>Potential Tropical Cyclone<\/strong> when a weather system, which is not a tropical cyclone, has the potential to become a tropical cyclone and watches and warnings need to be issued.\u00a0 For example, if a tropical wave is not yet well organized enough to be classified as a tropical depression or tropical storm, but NHC forecasts the system to become a tropical cyclone, NHC may designated the system as a <strong>Potential Tropical Cyclone<\/strong> if watches or warnings need to be issued.\u00a0 <strong>Potential Tropical Cyclones <\/strong>are given a number just like tropical cyclones and subtropical cyclones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meteorologists typically assign large low pressure systems to one of three types. 1.
