Typhoon Bavi passed west of Okinawa on Sunday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Typhoon Bavi was located at latitude 27.2\u00b0N and longitude 125.6\u00b0E which put it about 595 miles (965 km) south-southwest of Chinhae, South Korea.\u00a0 Bavi was moving toward the east-northeast at 4 m.p.h. (6 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 979 mb.<\/p>\n
A circular eye developed at the center of Typhoon Bavi.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Bavi.\u00a0 Storms near the core were generating upper level divergence which was pumping mass away from the typhoon.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 45 miles from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (225 km) from the center.<\/p>\n
Typhoon Bavi will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 Bavi will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi will intensify during the next 36 hours and it could strengthen to the equivalent of a major hurricane.<\/p>\n
Typhoon Bavi will move around the western end of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer Bavi toward the north during the next several days.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Bavi will pass west of the northern Ryukyu Islands.\u00a0 Bavi could be southeast of South Korea in about 72 hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
