{"id":10272,"date":"2020-09-03T20:34:29","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T20:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=10272"},"modified":"2020-09-03T20:34:29","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T20:34:29","slug":"typhoon-haishen-intensifies-to-equivalent-of-major-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=10272","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Haishen Intensifies to Equivalent of Major Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Haishen intensified to the equivalent of a major hurricane over the Western North Pacific Ocean on Thursday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Typhoon Haishen was located at latitude 21.4\u00b0N and longitude 135.4\u00b0E which put it about 405 miles (650 km) southeast of Minamidaitojima, Japan.\u00a0 Haishen was moving toward the west-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 145 m.p.h. (235 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 175 m.p.h. (280 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 938 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Haishen intensified rapidly on Thursday.\u00a0 A circular eye became more visible on conventional satellite images.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Haishen.\u00a0 Storms near the core generated strong upper level divergence which pumped mass away from the typhoon.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Typhoon Haishen increased in size on Thursday.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 65 miles (105 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 215 miles (315 km) from the center.\u00a0 The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) was 29.9.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 23.5 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 53.4.\u00a0 Typhoon Haishen was capable of causing widespread significant damage.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Haishen will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Haishen will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Haishen could strengthen to the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Haishen will move around the western end of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer Typhoon Haishen toward the northwest during the next 36 hours.\u00a0 Haishen will move more toward the north when it reaches the western end of the high pressure system.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Haishen could reach Minamidaitojima in about 36 hours.\u00a0 Haishen could approach the northern Ryukyu Islands in about 48 hours.\u00a0 Typhoon Haishen could hit South Korea in a little over three days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Haishen intensified to the equivalent of a major hurricane over the Western North Pacific Ocean on Thursday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Typhoon Haishen was located at latitude 21.4\u00b0N and longitude 135.4\u00b0E which put it about 405 miles (650 km) southeast of Minamidaitojima, Japan.\u00a0 Haishen was moving toward the west-northwest [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[466,2191,650,44,194,130,2194,467],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10272"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=10272"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10272\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":10273,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10272\/revisions\/10273"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=10272"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=10272"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=10272"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
