{"id":10560,"date":"2020-10-07T16:40:26","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T16:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=10560"},"modified":"2020-10-07T16:40:26","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T16:40:26","slug":"hurricane-delta-clips-northeast-yucatan-watches-issued-for-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=10560","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Delta Clips Northeast Yucatan, Watches Issued for U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Delta clipped the northeastern corner of the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday morning and watches were issued for portions of the U.S. Gulf Coast.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Delta was located at latitude 21.4\u00b0N and longitude 88.0\u00b0W which put it about 65 miles (105 km) west-southeast of Cabo Catoche, Mexico.\u00a0 Delta was moving toward the northwest at 17 m.p.h. (28 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 105 m.p.h. (165 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 125 m.p.h. (200 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 975 mb.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Tulum to Dzilam, Mexico including Cozumel.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Watch was issued for the portion of the coast from High Island, Texas to Grand Isle, Louisiana.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Tropical Storm Warnings were in effect for the portions of coast from Punta Herrero to Tulum, Mexico and from Dzilam to Progreso, Mexico.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Tropical Storm Watches were issued for the portions of the coast from San Luis Pass to High Island, Texas and from Grand Isle, Louisiana to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi including New Orleans, Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Delta brought strong winds and locally heavy rain to the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula and the island of Cozumel on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 The center of Delta officially made landfall on the coast about 20 miles (30 km) south of Cancun, Mexico.\u00a0 A weather station in Cancun reported a sustained wind speed of 84 m.p.h. (135 km\/h) and a wind gust of 106 m.p.h. (170 km\/h).<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Delta weakened during Tuesday night before it made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula.\u00a0 It appeared as though an eyewall replacement cycle occurred in Hurricane Delta.\u00a0 The original small eyewall, which had a diameter of 4 miles (6 km) weakened.\u00a0 Since the strongest winds were occurring in that eyewall, the wind speeds decreased when it weakened.\u00a0 Microwave satellite imagery suggested that a new, larger eye was developing at the center of Delta when it made landfall.<\/p>\n<p>The eyewall replacement cycle also caused the size of the circulation around Hurricane Delta to increase.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 130 miles (210 km) from the center of Delta.\u00a0 The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Delta was 17.8.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 10.2 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size (Index (HWISI) was 28.0.\u00a0 Delta was capable of causing regional serious damage.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Delta will move through an environment favorable for intensification when it moves over the southern Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 Delta will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the western part of an upper level ridge.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weaker in that part of the ridge and there will be less vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Hurricane Delta is likely to intensify during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 An upper level trough over the south central U.S. will produce southerly winds which will blow toward the top of Delta on Friday.\u00a0 Those winds winds cause more vertical wind shear and Delta will likely weaken when it approaches the Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Delta will move around the western end of a high pressure system over the western Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer Delta toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Hurricane Delta will move more toward the north on Thursday when it reaches the western end of the high pressure system.\u00a0 The upper level trough over the south central U.S. will turn Delta toward the north-northeast on Friday.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Hurricane Delta will approach the coast of Louisiana on Friday.\u00a0 Delta could be near the threshold for a major hurricane when it approaches the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Delta will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to Louisiana on Friday.\u00a0 The wind will push water toward the coast.\u00a0 A storm surge of 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 meters) could occur in some locations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Delta clipped the northeastern corner of the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday morning and watches were issued for portions of the U.S. Gulf Coast.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Delta was located at latitude 21.4\u00b0N and longitude 88.0\u00b0W which put it about 65 miles (105 km) west-southeast of Cabo Catoche, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[2263,2264,1303,2163,2262,2265,650,1775,2269,1213,113,24,716,53],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10560"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=10560"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10560\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":10561,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10560\/revisions\/10561"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=10560"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=10560"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=10560"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
