{"id":1159,"date":"2015-07-15T17:42:03","date_gmt":"2015-07-15T17:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=1159"},"modified":"2015-07-15T17:42:03","modified_gmt":"2015-07-15T17:42:03","slug":"dolores-becomes-a-major-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=1159","title":{"rendered":"Dolores Becomes a Major Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Dolores intensified rapidly on Tuesday night and it has reached Major Hurricane status.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Dolores was located at latitude 18.4\u00b0N and longitude 110.2\u00b0W which put it about 310 miles (500 km) south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 130 m.p.h. (215 km\/h) which made Dolores a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.\u00a0 There were wind gusts to 160 m.p.h. (260 km\/h) and the minimum surface pressure was 946 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Dolores is currently over water where the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is around 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It is generating well developed upper level outflow which is pumping out mass and there is not much vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Dolores could strengthen some more during the next 24 hours, although eyewall replacement cycles could produce fluctuations in intensity.\u00a0 When Dolores moves north of latitude 20\u00b0N, it will move over cooler SSTs and it should start to weaken.\u00a0 Given its size and intensity, it could take several days for the circulation around Dolores to spin down.<\/p>\n<p>A ridge in the middle levels is steering Dolores toward the west-northwest.\u00a0 That general steering pattern is expected to continue during the next few days and Dolores poses no current threat to land.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Dolores intensified rapidly on Tuesday night and it has reached Major Hurricane status.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Dolores was located at latitude 18.4\u00b0N and longitude 110.2\u00b0W which put it about 310 miles (500 km) south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 130 m.p.h.
