The center of powerful Typhoon Goni is passing west of Okinawa.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Typhoon Goni was located at latitude 26.9\u00b0N and longitude 126.3\u00b0E which put it about 125 miles (200 km) west of Okinawa.\u00a0 Goni was moving northeast at 18 m.p.h. (29 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed 125 m.p.h. (200 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 155 m.p.h. (250 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 937 mb.<\/p>\n
An upper level trough northwest of Goni contributed to the development of an outflow channel which pumped out mass and allowed the typhoon to intensify on Sunday.\u00a0 Goni is a strong well organized typhoon with an eye and a well formed eyewall.\u00a0 Spiral bands of thunderstorms are rotating around the core of the circulation.\u00a0 A weather station on Ishigaki Jima, Japan reported a wind gust to 97 m.p.h. (155 km\/h) when Goni passed over the island.\u00a0 Goni is moving over warm Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) and it could maintain its intensity for another 24 hours.\u00a0 After that time it will move over cooler SSTs and the upper level trough will generate more vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Goni will finally start to spin down when it moves west of Kyushu.<\/p>\n
The upper level trough will continue to pull Goni toward the northeast.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Goni will approach western Kyushu in about 24 hours.\u00a0 It could bring strong winds and heavy rain to parts of western Japan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
