{"id":2028,"date":"2015-12-15T04:16:12","date_gmt":"2015-12-15T04:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=2028"},"modified":"2015-12-15T04:16:12","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T04:16:12","slug":"typhoon-melor-making-landfall-on-mindoro-as-equivalent-of-cat-4-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=2028","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Melor Making Landfall on Mindoro as Equivalent of Cat. 4 Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Melor intensified on Monday and it is making landfall on Mindoro in the Philippines as the equivalent of a Category 4 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Monday the center of Typhoon Melor was located at latitude 13.0\u00b0N and longitude 121.5\u00b0E which put it about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Calapan and about 125 miles (205 km) south-southeast of Manila, Philippines.\u00a0 Melor was moving toward the west at 8 m.p.h. (13 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 140 m.p.h. (230 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 170 m.p.h. (270 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 939 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The core of Typhoon Melor passed just north of Samar and it quickly moved over the southeastern tip of Luzon.\u00a0 Since the core stayed mainly over water, the circulation was not seriously disrupted by the increased friction that would have occurred if it had moved over land.\u00a0 As a result, the core Typhoon Melor was intact when it moved over the Sibuyan Sea.\u00a0 The circulation was able to extract energy from the warm water of Sibuyan Sea.\u00a0 Melor was in an area where the upper level winds were light and there was little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The favorable environment allowed the typhoon to intensify further on Monday and Melor reached the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>The center of Typhoon Melor is making a landfall on the northeast coast of Mindoro.\u00a0 Since the core of Melor will be moving over the island of Mindoro during the next few hours, the typhoon should start to weaken.\u00a0 Melor will likely still be a typhoon when the center emerges over the South China Sea.\u00a0 A strong surge of cold, dry air from the north will increase vertical wind shear around Typhoon Melor in 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 The dry air and increased wind shear will weaken Melor more rapidly after that occurs.<\/p>\n<p>A subtropical ridge is steering Typhoon Melor toward the west and that general motion is expected to continue for another 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 After that time a weakening Melor will be steered by the flow closer to the surface, which should start to push it toward the southwest.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Melor will bring very strong winds and heavy rain to Mindoro and southern Luzon.\u00a0 The core of Melor should stay south of Manila, but locally heavy rain may be possible.\u00a0 Heavy rain could also cause flooding and mudslides in areas of steep terrain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Melor intensified on Monday and it is making landfall on Mindoro in the Philippines as the equivalent of a Category 4 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Monday the center of Typhoon Melor was located at latitude 13.0\u00b0N and longitude 121.5\u00b0E which put it about 20 miles (32 km) southeast [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[293,103,297,64,295,294],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2028"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=2028"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2028\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2029,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2028\/revisions\/2029"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=2028"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=2028"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=2028"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
