{"id":20400,"date":"2024-06-19T12:52:18","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T12:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20400"},"modified":"2024-06-19T13:13:49","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T13:13:49","slug":"tropical-storm-forming-over-western-gulf-of-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20400","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Forming over Western Gulf of Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A tropical storm is forming over the western Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 The low pressure system is currently designated as Potential Tropical Cyclone One.\u00a0 At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Potential Tropical Cyclone One was located at latitude 22.7\u00b0N and longitude 94.3\u00b0W which put it about 235 miles (380 km) east-southeast of La Pesca, Mexico and about 295 miles (475 km) southeast of Brownsville, Texas.\u00a0 The low pressure system was moving toward the west-northwest at 8 m.p.h. (13 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 997 mb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-orange-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17fb1178408dc7d1fc730dbc512b9998\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from San Luis Pass, Texas to Puerto de Altamira, Mexico. The Tropical Storm Warning includes Corpus Christi and Brownsville, Texas.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A low pressure system over the western Gulf of Mexico, currently designated as Potential Tropical Cyclone One, on Wednesday morning is beginning to develop a structure more like a tropical cyclone.\u00a0 Thunderstorms are staring to develop near the center of the low pressure system.\u00a0 A band of thunderstorms wraps around the southern and eastern side of Potential Tropical Cyclone One.\u00a0 Other bands of showers and thunderstorms are revolving around the middle of the low pressure system.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of winds around Potential Tropical Cyclone One is still asymmetrical.\u00a0 The winds near the middle of the low pressure system are relatively weak.\u00a0 The strongest winds are occurring in a band of thunderstorms about 400 miles (645 km) north of the middle of Potential Tropical Cyclone One.\u00a0 Some of the winds in that band of storms are blowing at tropical storm force.\u00a0 An anemometer at Garden Banks 783 (KGBK) is measuring a sustained wind speed of 45 m.p.h. (75 km\/h) and wind gusts of 50 m.p.h (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The anemometer is at a height of 58.2 meters above sea level.\u00a0 The winds in the rest of the low pressure system are blowing at less than tropical storm force.<\/p>\n<p>The low pressure system will move through an environment favorable for the development of a tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Potential Tropical Cyclone One will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the the center of an upper level ridge over the western Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the center of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Potential Tropical Cyclone One is forecast to develop into a tropical storm during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 In order to be classified as a tropical cyclone, a distinct low level center of circulation will have to form.\u00a0 Thunderstorms will have to develop and to persist near the low level center.\u00a0 The strongest winds will need to occur near the low level center of circulation in order for Potential Tropical Cyclone One to be classified as a tropical storm.<\/p>\n<p>Potential Tropical Cyclone One will move south of a strong high pressure system over the eastern U.S.\u00a0 The strong high pressure system will block Potential Tropical Cyclone One and the high pressure system will prevent the low pressure system from moving toward the north.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer the low pressure system toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Potential Tropical Cyclone One could approach the coast of northern Mexico and southern Texas on Wednesday evening.\u00a0 The center of the low pressure system is likely to make landfall between Tampico and La Pesca, Mexico<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-89153bdfe78178a19a7d825f2a49007e\">Potential Tropical Cyclone One is likely to be a tropical storm when it approaches the coast.\u00a0 The low pressure system will produce gusty winds along the coast of Texas and northern Mexico.\u00a0 Potential Tropical Cyclone One will also drop heavy rain on parts of northern Mexico and southern Texas.\u00a0 Up to 12 inches (300 mm) of rain could fall on parts of south Texas.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Flood Watches were in effect for parts of South Central, Southeast and South Texas.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong>Up to 20 inches (500 mm) of rain could fall on parts of northern Mexico where the winds blow the air up the slopes of mountains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-89153bdfe78178a19a7d825f2a49007e\">Potential Tropical Cyclone One will cause a storm surge of up to four feet (one meter) where the winds blow the water toward the coast.\u00a0 The water is already causing some flooding along parts of the coast of Texas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A tropical storm is forming over the western Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 The low pressure system is currently designated as Potential Tropical Cyclone One.\u00a0 At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Potential Tropical Cyclone One was located at latitude 22.7\u00b0N and longitude 94.3\u00b0W which put it about 235 miles (380 km) [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[316,317,2090,789,1653,24,3624,2915,3625,3626,112],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20400"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=20400"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20400\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20404,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20400\/revisions\/20404"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=20400"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=20400"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=20400"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
