{"id":20498,"date":"2024-07-01T17:07:43","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:07:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20498"},"modified":"2024-07-01T17:07:43","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:07:43","slug":"hurricane-beryl-batters-the-grenadine-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20498","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Beryl Batters the Grenadine Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Beryl battered the Grenadine Islands on Monday.\u00a0 At 12:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Hurricane Beryl was located at latitude 12.5\u00b0N and longitude 61.5\u00b0W which put the center about 15 miles (25 km) west of Carriacou Island.\u00a0 Beryl was moving toward the west-northwest at 20 m.p.h. (32 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 150 m.p.h. (240 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 180 m.p.h. (290 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 950 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Hurricane Warnings were in effect for Barbados, Grenada, Tobago, and St. Vincent and the Grenadine Islands.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Watch was is in effect for Jamaica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Tropical Storm Warnings were in effect for St. Lucia, Martinique and Trinidad.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for the south coast of the Dominican Republic from Punta Palenque to the border with Haiti.\u00a0 A Tropical Storm Watch was also in effect<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">for the south coast of Haiti from Anse d\u2019Hainault to the border with the Dominican Republic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl intensified rapidly after it completed an Eyewall Replacement Cycle early on Monday.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 23 miles (37 km) was present at the center of Beryl&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Beryl.\u00a0 Storms near the core generated strong upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane in all directions.\u00a0 The removal of large amounts of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Completion of the Eyewall Replacement Cycle caused the size of the circulation around Hurricane Beryl to increase.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 40 miles (65 km) from the center of Beryl\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 125 miles (200 km) from the center of Hurricane Beryl.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Beryl was 31.6.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 12.5 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 44.1.\u00a0 Hurricane Beryl was similar in intensity and just a little smaller than Hurricane Ida was when Ida hit Louisiana in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Beryl will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge over the tropical Atlantic Ocean and eastern Caribbean Sea.\u00a0 The ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Beryl\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The winds in the lower levels of the atmosphere are also blowing from the east and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Hurricane Beryl is likely to intensify during the next 24 hours unless another Eyewall Replacement Cycle occurs.\u00a0 There is a chance that Hurricane Beryl could strengthen to a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Beryl toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Beryl will move away from the Windward Islands during the next few hours.\u00a0 Beryl will pass south of Puerto Rico on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The core of Hurricane Beryl is passing over the Grenadine Islands.\u00a0 Beryl is capable of causing regional severe damage.\u00a0 Widespread outages of electricity are likely.\u00a0 Hurricane Beryl will also drop heavy rain.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.\u00a0 Hurricane Beryl could cause a storm surge of up to 13 feet (4 meters) on the parts of islands where the wind blows the water toward the shore.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl will also bring strong winds and heavy rain in Grenada, St. Vincent, and St. Lucia, Tobago, and Martinique.
