{"id":20545,"date":"2024-07-05T12:40:22","date_gmt":"2024-07-05T12:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20545"},"modified":"2024-07-05T15:50:59","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T15:50:59","slug":"hurricane-beryl-hits-the-yucatan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20545","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Beryl Hits the Yucatan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Beryl hit the Yucatan Peninsula on Friday morning.\u00a0 At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Hurricane Beryl was located at latitude 20.4\u00b0N and longitude 87.6\u00b0W which put the center about 15 miles (25 km) north-northwest of Tulum, Mexico.\u00a0 Beryl was moving toward the west-northwest at 15 m.p.h. (24 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h. (195 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 980 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>A Hurricane Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, Mexico.\u00a0 A Hurricane Warning was also in effect for Cozumel.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Watch was in effect for portion of the coast from Cabo Catoche to Cancun, Mexico.\u00a0 A Hurricane Watch was also in effect for the portion of the coast from Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal, Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Campeche to Cancun, Mexico. \u00a0 A Tropical Storm Warning was also in effect for the portion of the coast from Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal, Mexico.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The center of Hurricane Beryl made landfall on the coast of Mexico near Tulum on Friday morning.\u00a0 Beryl was a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale at the time of landfall.\u00a0 A small circular eye was present at the center of Beryl&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a broken ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Beryl.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Beryl\u2019s circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the circulation around Hurricane Beryl was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Beryl\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 105 miles (165 km) from the center of Hurricane Beryl.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Beryl was 16.5.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 9.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 25.8.\u00a0 Hurricane Beryl was similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Idalia when Idalia hit Florida in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl will move around the southern side of a high pressure system that extends over the western Atlantic Ocean and southeastern U.S.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Beryl toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Hurricane Beryl will move across the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula during the rest of Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula.\u00a0 Strong winds and heavy rain will occur in Quintana Roo and Yucatan.\u00a0 Beryl is capable of causing serious damage.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause floods in some locations.\u00a0 Hurricane Beryl could cause a storm surge of up to 10 feet (3 meters) along the portion of the coast north of Tulum.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl will weaken as it moves across the Yucatan Peninsula.\u00a0 Beryl will likely weaken to a tropical storm while it is over the Yucatan.\u00a0 Hurricane Beryl will move over the western Gulf of Mexico during the weekend.\u00a0 Beryl will move into an environment somewhat favorable for intensification when it reaches the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 Beryl will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the eastern part of an upper level low over the western Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 The upper level low will produce southerly winds that will blow toward the top of Beryl\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the shear may not be enough to prevent strengthening.\u00a0 Beryl could could intensify back to a hurricane when it moves over the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Beryl will move more toward the northwest during the weekend.\u00a0 Beryl could approach the coast of Texas on Sunday.\u00a0 Watches may be issued for the coast later on Friday or on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Beryl hit the Yucatan Peninsula on Friday morning.\u00a0 At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Hurricane Beryl was located at latitude 20.4\u00b0N and longitude 87.6\u00b0W which put the center about 15 miles (25 km) north-northwest of Tulum, Mexico.\u00a0 Beryl was moving toward the west-northwest at 15 m.p.h.
