{"id":20871,"date":"2024-08-17T12:21:37","date_gmt":"2024-08-17T12:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20871"},"modified":"2024-08-17T17:55:58","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T17:55:58","slug":"hurricane-ernesto-hits-bermuda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20871","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Ernesto Hits Bermuda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Ernesto hit Bermuda early on Saturday.\u00a0 At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Hurricane Ernesto was located at latitude 32.6\u00b0N and longitude 64.6\u00b0W which put the center about 15 miles (25 km) north-northeast of Bermuda. \u00a0\u00a0 Ernesto was moving toward the north-northeast at 9 m.p.h. (15 km\/h).\u00a0\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h). \u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 974 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>A Hurricane Warning was in effect for Bermuda.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The center of Hurricane Ernesto passed over Bermuda early on Saturday.\u00a0 A weather station at the L.F. Wade International airport reported a sustained wind speed of 61 m.p.h. (98 km\/h) and a wind gust of 84 m.p.h. (135 km\/h).\u00a0 There were reports of widespread electricity outages in Bermuda.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the circulation around Hurricane Ernesto was large when Ernesto moved over Bermuda.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 70 miles (110 km) from the center of Ernesto\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 240 miles (390 km) from the center of Hurricane Ernesto.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) was 12.7.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 22.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 35.0.\u00a0 Hurricane Ernesto was similar in intensity to Hurricane Irene when Irene hit North Carolina in 2011.\u00a0 Ernesto was not quite as large as Irene was.<\/p>\n<p>Drier air was pulled around the southern side of Hurricane Ernesto as it approached Bermuda.\u00a0 The drier air caused many of the thunderstorms in the western and southern parts of Ernesto&#8217;s circulation to weaken.\u00a0 Bands in the western and southern sides of Hurricane Ernesto consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were still occurring in bands in the eastern and northern parts of Ernesto.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Ernesto&#8217;s circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the northeast of the hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Ernesto will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Ernesto will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern portion of an upper level trough off the east coast of the U.S.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Ernesto\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The drier air In Ernesto&#8217;s circulation will inhibit intensification.\u00a0 Hurricane Ernesto is likely to maintain its intensity during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Ernesto will move around the western side of a subtropical high pressure system over the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Ernesto toward the north-northeast during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Ernesto will move away from Bermuda on Saturday.\u00a0 An upper level trough over the Great Lakes will steer Ernesto toward the northeast more quickly on Sunday.\u00a0 Hurricane Ernesto could approach Newfoundland on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>The wind speeds will diminish in Bermuda as Hurricane Ernesto moves farther away on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Ernesto hit Bermuda early on Saturday.\u00a0 At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Hurricane Ernesto was located at latitude 32.6\u00b0N and longitude 64.6\u00b0W which put the center about 15 miles (25 km) north-northeast of Bermuda. \u00a0\u00a0 Ernesto was moving toward the north-northeast at 9 m.p.h.
