{"id":20887,"date":"2024-08-18T21:21:39","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T21:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20887"},"modified":"2024-08-18T21:21:39","modified_gmt":"2024-08-18T21:21:39","slug":"hurricane-ernesto-moves-toward-southeastern-newfoundland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20887","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Ernesto Moves Toward Southeastern Newfoundland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Ernesto moved toward southeastern Newfoundland on Sunday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Hurricane Ernesto was located at latitude 37.9\u00b0N and longitude 62.3\u00b0W which put the center about 815 miles (1310 km) southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland.\u00a0 Ernesto was moving toward the north-northeast at 17 m.p.h. (28 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 977 mb.<\/p>\n<p>After briefly weakening to a tropical storm north of Bermuda on Saturday night, Ernesto strengthened back to a hurricane on Sunday.\u00a0 The inner end of a rainband wrapped back around the center of Hurricane Ernesto.\u00a0 A circular eye was visible again at the center of Ernesto&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorm and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Thunderstorms also developed in the rainbands revolving around the center of Hurricane Ernesto.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Ernesto generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the northeast of the hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the circulation around Hurricane Ernesto was a little smaller on Sunday.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 35 miles (55 km) in the southeastern quadrant of Ernesto&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 220 miles (355 km) from the center of Hurricane Ernesto.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Ernesto will move through an environment that will be favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Ernesto will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the eastern portion of an upper level trough over the Great Lakes.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Ernesto\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the shear will not be enough to stop intensification.\u00a0 Hurricane Ernesto is likely to strengthen during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Ernesto will move over colder water on Monday night.\u00a0 The colder water and vertical wind shear will cause Hurricane Ernesto to make a transition to an extratropical cyclone.<\/p>\n<p>The upper level trough over the Great Lakes will steer Hurricane Ernesto toward the northeast during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated path, Ernesto will pass far to the south of Nova Scotia on Sunday night.\u00a0 Hurricane Ernesto will be near southeastern Newfoundland on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Ernesto moved toward southeastern Newfoundland on Sunday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Hurricane Ernesto was located at latitude 37.9\u00b0N and longitude 62.3\u00b0W which put the center about 815 miles (1310 km) southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland.\u00a0 Ernesto was moving toward the north-northeast at 17 m.p.h.
