{"id":20889,"date":"2024-08-18T21:36:43","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T21:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20889"},"modified":"2024-08-18T21:36:43","modified_gmt":"2024-08-18T21:36:43","slug":"tropical-storm-gilma-forms-south-of-baja-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20889","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Gilma Forms South of Baja California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Gilma formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Baja California on Sunday afternoon.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Gilma was located at latitude 14.7\u00b0N and longitude 112.3\u00b0W which put the center about 585 miles (945 km) south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Gilma was moving toward the west at 12 m.p.h. (19 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1005 mb.<\/p>\n<p>An area of low pressure over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Baja California strengthened on Sunday afternoon and the U.S. National Hurricane Center designated the system as Tropical Storm Gilma.\u00a0 A well defined low level center of circulation was evident in visible satellite images.\u00a0 However, the distribution of thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Gilma was asymmetrical.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western side of Gilma&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Gilma consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Gilma started to generate upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the west of the tropical storm.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of wind speeds in Tropical Storm Gilma was also asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 45 miles (75 km) in the northern side of Gilma&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The winds in the southern side of Gilma were blowing at less than tropical storm force.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Gilma will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Gilma will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge over the Eastern north Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Gilma&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the shear will not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Tropical Storm GIlma is likely to intensify during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Gilma will move around the southern side of a subtropical high pressure system over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Gilma toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Gilma will move farther away from Baja California.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Gilma formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Baja California on Sunday afternoon.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Gilma was located at latitude 14.7\u00b0N and longitude 112.3\u00b0W which put the center about 585 miles (945 km) south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Gilma [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[429,39,431,1108,24,1107],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20889"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=20889"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20889\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20890,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20889\/revisions\/20890"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=20889"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=20889"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=20889"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
