{"id":20909,"date":"2024-08-21T15:40:53","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T15:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20909"},"modified":"2024-08-21T15:40:53","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T15:40:53","slug":"gilma-intensifies-to-a-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20909","title":{"rendered":"Gilma Intensifies to a Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Gilma intensified to a hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean between Baja California and Mexico on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Gilma was located at latitude 16.0\u00b0N and longitude 122.8\u00b0W which put the center about 965 miles (1555 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Gilma was moving toward the west at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 983 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Former Tropical Storm Gilma intensified to a hurricane between Baja California and Hawaii on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the center of Hurricane Gilma.\u00a0 A circular eye was evident on microwave satellite images of Gilma.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Gilma.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Gilma&#8217;s circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Hurricane Gilma was more symmetrical on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Gilma&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (220 km) from the center of Hurricane Gilma.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Gilma will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Gilma will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge over the Eastern north Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce northeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Gilma\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the shear will not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Hurricane Gilma will continue to intensify during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Gilma could strengthen to a major hurricane later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Gilma will move around the southern side of a subtropical high pressure system over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Gilma toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Gilma will move farther away from Baja California.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Gilma intensified to a hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean between Baja California and Mexico on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Gilma was located at latitude 16.0\u00b0N and longitude 122.8\u00b0W which put the center about 965 miles (1555 km) west-southwest of the southern tip [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[429,39,431,1108,23,3684,24],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20909"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=20909"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20909\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20910,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20909\/revisions\/20910"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=20909"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=20909"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=20909"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
