{"id":20946,"date":"2024-08-26T02:28:54","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T02:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20946"},"modified":"2024-08-26T02:28:54","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T02:28:54","slug":"typhoon-shanshan-continues-to-strengthen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20946","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Shanshan Continues to Strengthen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Shanshan continues to strengthen over the Western North Pacific Ocean south of Japan on Sunday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Typhoon Shanshan was located at latitude 27.3\u00b0N and longitude 133.5\u00b0E which put the center about 350 miles (565 km) south-southeast of Kagoshima, Japan.\u00a0 Shanshan was moving toward the west-northwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 968 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Shanshan strengthened gradually on Sunday as it moved over the Western North Pacific Ocean south of Japan.\u00a0 A large circular eye was present at the center of Shanshan&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Typhoon Shanshan.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Shanshan&#8217;s circulation generated more upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the typhoon.\u00a0 The removal of more mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the circulation around typhoon Shanshan increased slightly on Sunday.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 35 miles (55 km) from the center of Shanshan&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 145 miles (230 km) from the center of Typhoon Shanshan.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Shanshan was 13.9.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 11.7 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 25.6.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Shanshan will move through an environment that will be favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Shanshan will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the northern periphery of an upper level low south of Japan.\u00a0 The upper level low will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Shanshan\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the wind shear will not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Typhoon Shanshan will intensify during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Shanshan will move around the western end of a high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Shanshan toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Typhoon Shanshan will move closer to Kyushu and Shikoku.\u00a0 Shanshan could approach southwestern Japan in 48 hours.\u00a0 Shanshan could be a strong typhoon when it approaches Japan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Shanshan continues to strengthen over the Western North Pacific Ocean south of Japan on Sunday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Typhoon Shanshan was located at latitude 27.3\u00b0N and longitude 133.5\u00b0E which put the center about 350 miles (565 km) south-southeast of Kagoshima, Japan.\u00a0 Shanshan was moving toward the west-northwest at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[466,650,44,1150,133,1121,523,1125,467],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20946"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=20946"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20946\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20947,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20946\/revisions\/20947"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=20946"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=20946"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=20946"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
