{"id":20962,"date":"2024-08-27T21:14:45","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T21:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20962"},"modified":"2024-08-27T21:14:45","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T21:14:45","slug":"typhoon-shanshan-strengthens-to-equivalent-of-a-cat-4-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20962","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Shanshan Strengthens to Equivalent of a Cat. 4 Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Shanshan strengthened to the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale over the northern Ryukyu Islands on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Typhoon Shanshan was located at latitude 29.2\u00b0N and longitude 130.0\u00b0E which put the center about 90 miles (145 km) south-southwest of Kamiyaku, Japan.\u00a0 Shanshan was moving toward the north-northwest at 5 m.p.h. (8 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 130 m.p.h. (210 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 160 m.p.h. (260 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 932 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Shanshan intensified to the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on Tuesday.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 30 miles (50 km) was at the center of Shanshan\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Typhoon Shanshan.\u00a0 Storms near the core generated strong upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the typhoon.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Typhoon Shanshan was symmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Shanshan\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 145 miles (230 km) from the center of Typhoon Shanshan.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Shanshan was 25.1.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 12.1 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 37.2.\u00a0 Typhoon Shanshan was similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Harvey when Harvey hit Texas in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Shanshan will move through an environment that will be favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Shanshan will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Shanshan could intensify during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Shanshan will move around the western end of a high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Shanshan toward the north-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Typhoon Shanshan will toward western Kyushu.\u00a0 Shanshan could approach western Kyushu in 36 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Shanshan will continue to produce strong winds and heavy rain in the northern Ryukyu Islands.\u00a0 The eastern side of the eyewall of Shanshan will move near Yakushima.\u00a0 Shanshan will be capable of causing severe damage.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.\u00a0 Typhoon Shanshan will also cause a storm surge in the northern Ryukyu Islands where the wind blows the water toward the shore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Shanshan strengthened to the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale over the northern Ryukyu Islands on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Typhoon Shanshan was located at latitude 29.2\u00b0N and longitude 130.0\u00b0E which put the center about 90 miles (145 km) south-southwest of Kamiyaku, Japan.\u00a0 Shanshan [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[466,650,44,3691,133,194,1121,1125,467,3034],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20962"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=20962"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20962\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20963,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20962\/revisions\/20963"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=20962"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=20962"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=20962"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
