{"id":20977,"date":"2024-08-29T21:15:05","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T21:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20977"},"modified":"2024-08-29T21:15:05","modified_gmt":"2024-08-29T21:15:05","slug":"gilma-weakens-east-of-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=20977","title":{"rendered":"Gilma Weakens East of Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Gilma weakened east of Hawaii on Thursday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Depression Gilma was located at latitude 20.3\u00b0N and longitude 151.7\u00b0W which put the center about 225 miles (360 km) east of Hilo, Hawaii.\u00a0 Gilma was moving toward the west-northwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h. (75 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1010 mb.<\/p>\n<p>An upper level low west of California was producing strong southwesterly winds that blew toward the top of former Tropical Storm Gilma.\u00a0 Those winds caused strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The strong wind shear blew the middle and upper parts of Gilma;s circulation to the northeast of the lower portion of the circulation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gilma082924PP.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-20976\" src=\"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gilma082924PP-300x156.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gilma082924PP-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gilma082924PP-768x399.png 768w, https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gilma082924PP-624x324.png 624w, https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gilma082924PP.png 822w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lower portion of the circulation around Tropical Depression Gilma consisted primarily of bands of showers and low clouds.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were still being produced in the middle level circulation which was northeast of the low level center of Gilma.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Depression Gilma will move through an environment that will be unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Gilma will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 24\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level low west of California will continue to produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Gilma\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Depression Gilma is likely to continue to weaken during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Depression Gilma will move around the southern side of a subtropical high pressure system over the Eastern and Central North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Gilma toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Depression Gilma pass just north of Hawaii on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation in the western side of Tropical Depression Gilma could enhance the northeasterly trade winds.\u00a0 Stronger trade winds could cause more rain to fall on the northeastern slopes of the Hawaiian Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Hone was spinning southeast of Midway Island.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Hone was located at latitude 21.4\u00b0N and longitude 172.4\u00b0W which put the center about 565 miles (910 km) southeast of Midway Island.\u00a0 Hone was moving toward the west-northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h.
