The threat posed by rapidly intensifying Hurricane Milton prompted the issuance of a Hurricane Watch for the west coast of Florida on Monday morning.\u00a0 At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Hurricane Milton was located at latitude 21.8\u00b0N and longitude 92.9\u00b0W which put the center about 165 miles (265 km) west-northwest of Progreso, Mexico.\u00a0 Milton was moving toward the east-southeast at 8 m.p.h. (13 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 125 m.p.h. (200 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 150 m.p.h. (240 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 945 mb.<\/p>\n

It will move under the axis of an upper level ridge over the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the axis of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Hurricane Milton will intensify during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Milton could continue to intensify rapidly. Hurricane Milton could to strengthen to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale by Tuesday.<\/p>\n An upper level trough over the central U.S. will start to steer Milton more quickly toward the northeast during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Milton will reach the west coast of Florida on Wednesday. Kirk was moving toward the northeast at 30 m.p.h. (49 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h.
