(15 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 160 m.p.h. (260 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 190 m.p.h. (305 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 925 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Celestun to Rio Lagartos, Mexico.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Chokoloskee to the Mouth of the Suwanee River, Florida.\u00a0 The Hurricane Watch includes Tampa Bay.\u00a0 A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Lake Okeechobee.\u00a0 A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Dry Tortugas.\u00a0 A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Celestun to Campeche, Mexico.\u00a0 A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Rio Lagartos to Cabo Catoche, Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Rio Lagartos to Cancun, Mexico.\u00a0 A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Celestun to Campeche, Mexico.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the Florida Keys.\u00a0 A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Flamingo to Chokoloskee, Florida.\u00a0 A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from the Mouth of the Suwanee River to Indian Pass, Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on Monday morning.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 17 miles (28 km) was at the center of Milton\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Milton.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Milton\u2019s circulation generated strong upper level divergence that pumped large quantities of mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of large amounts of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Milton was a small hurricane.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Milton\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 80 miles (130 km) from the center of Hurricane Milton.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Milton is 35.0.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 10.6 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 45.6. Hurricane Milton is as strong as Hurricane Michael when Michael hit Northwest Florida in 2018.\u00a0 Milton is not quite as big as Michael was.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Milton move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Milton will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the axis of an upper level ridge over the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the axis of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear. Hurricane Milton will intensify during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Milton could continue to intensify rapidly for a few more hours.<\/p>\n<p>An upper level trough over the central U.S. will start to steer Milton more quickly toward the northeast during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Milton will reach the west coast of Florida on Wednesday.\u00a0 Milton will be a major hurricane when it reaches Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Milton will be a major hurricane when it hits the west coast of Florida. Milton will bring strong gusty winds and heavy rain to the west coast of Florida. Milton will also bring strong winds and heavy rain to central Florida. Milton will be capable of causing major damage. Heavy rains will cause floods in some locations. Widespread electricity outages are likely.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Flood Watches are in effect for much of the Florida Peninsula.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Milton will also produce a storm surge of up to 15 feet (4.5 meters) along the west coast of Florida.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Flamingo to the Mouth of the Suwanee River, Florida.\u00a0 The Storm Surge Watch includes Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Kirk was making an transition to a strong extratropical cyclone and Hurricane Leslie was spinning west of the Azores.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Hurricane Kirk was located at latitude 41.7\u00b0N and longitude 38.4\u00b0W which put the center about 655 miles (1055 km) west-northwest of the Azores.\u00a0 Kirk was moving toward the northeast at 29 m.p.h. (46 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 963 mb.<\/p>\n<p>At !!:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Hurricane Leslie was located at latitude 16.4\u00b0N and longitude 41.2\u00b0W which put the center about 1120 miles (1805 km) west of the Cabo Verde Islands.\u00a0 Leslie was moving toward the northwest at 13 m.p.h. (20 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h.
