{"id":21441,"date":"2024-10-24T21:15:15","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T21:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=21441"},"modified":"2024-10-24T21:15:15","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T21:15:15","slug":"hurricane-kristy-intensifies-to-cat-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=21441","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Kristy Intensifies to Cat. 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Kristy intensified to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Baja California on Thursday afternoon.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Hurricane Kristy was located at latitude 14.2\u00b0N and longitude 121.6\u00b0W which put the center about 970 miles (1565 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Kristy was moving toward the west at 16 m.p.h. (26 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 160 m.p.h. (260 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 190 m.p.h. (305 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 926 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Kristy looked like a Category 5 hurricane on visible satellite images on Thursday afternoon.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 17 miles (28 km) was at the center of Kristy\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Kristy.\u00a0 Storms near the core generated strong upper level divergence that pumped large amounts of mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of large amounts of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Hurricane Kristy was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 25 miles (40 km) from the center of Kristy\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 105 miles (165 km) from the center of Hurricane Kristy.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Kristy was 35.0.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 8.2 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 8.2.\u00a0 Hurricane Kristy is smaller than Hurricane Milton was when Milton was over the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Kristy will move through an environment that will become less favorable for a powerful hurricane during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Kristy will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move toward the southern end of an upper level trough between Hawaii and California.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce southwesterly winds that will start to affect Hurricane Kristy on Friday.\u00a0 Those upper level winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase.\u00a0 Hurricane Kristy will start to weaken when the vertical wind shear increases.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Kristy will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Kristy toward the northwest during the next 24 h.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Kristy will continue to remain far from any land mass.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Kristy intensified to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Baja California on Thursday afternoon.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Hurricane Kristy was located at latitude 14.2\u00b0N and longitude 121.6\u00b0W which put the center about 970 miles (1565 km) southwest of the southern [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[150,39,470,3788,650,1135],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21441"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=21441"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21441\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":21442,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21441\/revisions\/21442"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=21441"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=21441"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=21441"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
