Tropical Cyclone Chido was approaching Mayotte and Comoros on Friday afternoon.\u00a0 At 4:00 p.m. EST on Friday the center of Tropical Cyclone Chido was located at latitude 12.1\u00b0S and longitude 47.0\u00b0E which put the center about 135 miles (215 km) east-northeast of Mayotte.\u00a0 Chido was moving toward the west-southwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 105 m.p.h. (165 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 125 m.p.h. (200 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 969 mb.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Chido was weakening slowly as it approached Mayotte on Friday afternoon.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 15 miles (24 km) was at the center of Chido\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Tropical Cyclone Chido.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Chido generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The removal of mass in the upper levels was not quite able to balance the stronger inflow of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 The greater inflow of mass in the lower levels caused the surface pressure to increase.<\/p>\n
The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Chodi was very symmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extended out 45 miles (75 km) from the center of Chido\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 105 miles (165 km) from the center of Tropical Cyclone Chido.<\/p>\n
The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Tropical Cyclone Chido is 17.8.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 15.7 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 33.5.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Chido is similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Sally when Sally made landfall in south Alabama in 2020.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Chido will move through an environment favorable for a powerful tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Chido will move over water where where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the axis of an upper level ridge over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the axis of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Chido could maintain its intensity during the next 24 hours if the inflow of mass in the lower levels is balanced by the divergence of mass in the upper levels of the atmosphere.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Chido will move around the northern side of a high pressure system over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Chido toward the west-southwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Tropical Cyclone Chido will reach Mayotte in 12 hours.\u00a0 Chido could approach the coast of northern Mozambique in 36 hours.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Chido could be the equivalent of a major hurricane when it reaches Mayotte and the Comoros.\u00a0 The center of Chido will pass very close to Mayotte.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Chido will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to Mayotte.\u00a0 Chido could also bring strong winds and heavy rain to the southern Comoros.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Chido could also cause a storm surge of up to 10 feet (3 meters) along the coast of Mayotte and the southern Comoros.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
