Tropical Storm Pabuk developed over the South China Sea east of Vietnam on Monday.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Pabuk was located at latitude 11.5\u00b0N and longitude 112.5\u00b0E which put the center about 410 miles (660 km) east of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.\u00a0 Pabuk was moving toward the north at 6 m.p.h. (10 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1001 mb.<\/p>\n
The circulation around former Tropical Depression 28W strengthened on Monday and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Pabuk.\u00a0 The distribution of thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Pabuk was asymmetrical.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were occurring in a band in the northern part of Pabuk’s circulation.\u00a0 The bands in the other parts of Tropical Storm Pabuk consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.<\/p>\n
Tropical Storm Pabuk will move through an environment unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Pabuk will move over water where where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the western part of an upper level ridge over the Western North Pacific Ocean. The upper level ridge will produce southerly winds that will blow toward the top of Pabuk’s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 A surface high pressure system over eastern Asia will transport drier air into the western side of Tropical Storm Pabuk.\u00a0 The combination of drier air and moderate vertical wind shear is likely to cause Tropical Storm Pabuk to weaken during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n
