Tropical Cyclone Garance intensified to the equivalent of a major hurricane north of La Reunion on Thursday.\u00a0 At 4:00 a.m. EST on Thursday the center of Tropical Cyclone Garance was located at latitude 18.5\u00b0S and longitude 55.4\u00b0E which put the center about 155 miles (205 km) north of St. Denis, La, Reunion.\u00a0 Garance was moving toward the southeast at 5 m.p.h. (8 km\/h). 0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 120 m.p.h. (195 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 150 m.p.h. (240 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 955 mb.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Garance intensified to the equivalent of a major hurricane north of La Reunion on Thursday.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 17 miles (28 km) was at the center of Garance’s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Garance\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n
The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Garance was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extended out 35 miles (55 km) from the center of Garance\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 105 miles (165 km) from the center of Tropical Cyclone Garance.<\/p>\n
The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Tropical Cyclone Garance was 22.1.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 12.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 34.4. Tropical Cyclone Garance was similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Dennis when Dennis hit Northwest Florida in 2005.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Garance will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Garance will move over water where where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under an upper level ridge that is east of Madagascar.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak in the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Garance could continue to intensify during the next 12 hours unless an eyewall replacement cycle occurs.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Garance is likely to get pulled into the eastern side of the larger circulation around Tropical Cyclone Honde, which is over the southern Mozambique Channel.\u00a0 The larger circulation around Honde will steer Garance toward the south during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Cyclone Garance will reach La Reunion within the next 18 hours.<\/p>\n
Tropical Cyclone Garance is likely to be the equivalent of a major hurricane when it reaches La Reunion.\u00a0 Garance will be capable of causing major damage on La Reunion.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Garance will also drop heavy rain on La Reunion.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause widespread flash flooding.\u00a0 Garance could cause a storm surge of up to 10 feet (3 meters) along the coast of La Reunion.<\/p>\n
Bands in the eastern side of Tropical Cyclone Garance could also bring strong winds and heavy rain to Mauritius.\u00a0 There were reports that the airport on Mauritius was closed as a precaution.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, Tropical Cyclone Honde intensified to the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon over the southern Mozambique Channel near Madagascar.\u00a0 At 4:00 a.m. EST on Thursday the center of Tropical Cyclone Honde was located at latitude 25.0\u00b0S and longitude 41.8\u00b0E which put the center about 170 miles (280 km) southwest of Toliara, Madagascar.\u00a0 Honde was moving toward the southeast at 13 m.p.h. (21 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 970 mb.<\/p>\n
