{"id":22212,"date":"2025-03-30T02:08:43","date_gmt":"2025-03-30T02:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=22212"},"modified":"2025-03-30T02:08:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-30T02:08:43","slug":"tropical-cyclone-courtney-equivalent-of-cat-4-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=22212","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Courtney Equivalent of Cat. 4 Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney was the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale over the South Indian Ocean on Saturday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Cyclone Courtney was located at latitude 19.9\u00b0S and longitude 89.1\u00b0E which put the center about 715 miles (1150 km) southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 Courtney was moving toward the southwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 145 m.p.h. (230 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 175 m.p.h. (280 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 939 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney strengthened on Saturday.\u00a0 Courtney was the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.\u00a0 A small circular eye was present at the center of Courtney&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Courtney&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Courtney was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Courtney&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 105 miles (165 km) from the center of Tropical Cyclone Courtney.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Tropical Cyclone Courtney was 29.9.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 10.7 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 40.6.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney will move through an environment that will become unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Courtney will move over water where where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 26\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the eastern side of an upper level trough over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce northwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Courtney&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Courtney will weaken when the vertical wind shear increases.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney will move around the western end of a high pressure system over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Courtney toward the south during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Cyclone Courtney will move farther away from the Cocos Islands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney was the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale over the South Indian Ocean on Saturday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Cyclone Courtney was located at latitude 19.9\u00b0S and longitude 89.1\u00b0E which put the center about 715 miles (1150 km) southwest of the Cocos [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,2],"tags":[1506,67,3895,650,1507,3894],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22212"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=22212"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22212\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22213,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22212\/revisions\/22213"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=22212"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=22212"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=22212"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
