{"id":22220,"date":"2025-03-31T20:50:30","date_gmt":"2025-03-31T20:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=22220"},"modified":"2025-03-31T20:50:30","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T20:50:30","slug":"courtney-begins-transition-to-extratropical-cyclone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=22220","title":{"rendered":"Courtney Begins Transition to Extratropical Cyclone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney began a transition to an extratropical cyclone over the South Indian ocean on Monday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Cyclone Courtney was located at latitude 25.0\u00b0S and longitude 88.7\u00b0E which put the center about 1020 miles (1645 km) south-southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 Courtney was moving toward the south at 3 m.p.h. (5 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 986 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney began a transition to an extratropical cyclone over the South Indian Ocean south-southwest of the Cocos Islands on Monday.\u00a0 An upper level trough was producing strong northwesterly winds that were blowing across the top of Courtney&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds were causing strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The strong wind shear blew off the tops of many of the thunderstorms in Tropical Cyclone Courtney.\u00a0 A few thunderstorms were still occurring in a bands in the southeastern periphery of Courtney&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Bands in the other parts of Tropical Cyclone Courtney consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of thunderstorms in much of Tropical Cyclone Courtney caused the distribution of winds speeds to become asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 165 miles (265 km) in the southern half of Courtney&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force only extended out 85 miles (135 km) in the northern half of Tropical Cyclone Courtney.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney will move through an environment that will be unfavorable for intensification of a tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Courtney will move over water where where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 24\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the eastern side of an upper level trough over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce\u00a0 strong northwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Courtney\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause strong vertical wind shear to continue.\u00a0 The combination of colder Sea Surface Temperatures and strong vertical wind shear will cause Tropical Cyclone Courtney to continue to make a transition to an extratropical cyclone during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Since much of the circulation of Tropical Cyclone Courtney only exists in the the lower levels of the atmosphere, Courtney will be steered by the winds at those levels.\u00a0 Courtney will move around the northern side of a high pressure system over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Courtney toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Cyclone Courtney will move farther away from the Cocos Islands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Courtney began a transition to an extratropical cyclone over the South Indian ocean on Monday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Cyclone Courtney was located at latitude 25.0\u00b0S and longitude 88.7\u00b0E which put the center about 1020 miles (1645 km) south-southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 Courtney was moving toward [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,2],"tags":[1506,67,3895,1507,3894],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22220"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=22220"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22220\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22221,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22220\/revisions\/22221"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=22220"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=22220"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=22220"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
