{"id":22536,"date":"2025-07-02T03:28:30","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T03:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=22536"},"modified":"2025-07-02T03:28:30","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T03:28:30","slug":"flossie-intensifies-to-a-major-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=22536","title":{"rendered":"Flossie Intensifies to a Major Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Flossie intensified to a major hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico on Tuesday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Hurricane Flossie was located at latitude 18.2\u00b0N and longitude 107.4\u00b0W which put the center about 365 miles (585 km) south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. \u00a0 Flossie was moving toward the west-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 140 m.p.h. (220 km\/h). \u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 962 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Punta San Telmo to Playa Perula, Mexico.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Flossie continued to intensify on Tuesday evening.\u00a0 A circular eye was at the center of Flossie&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Flossie.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Flossie generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane in all directions.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Hurricane Flossie was relatively small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 25 miles (40 km) from the center of Flossie\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 90 miles (145 km) from the center of Hurricane Flossie.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Flossie is 20.6.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 8.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 28.9.\u00a0 Hurricane Flossie is similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Zeta when Zeta hit Louisiana in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Flossie will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Flossie will move over water where where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the middle of an upper level ridge over Mexico and the adjacent part of the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the middle of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Hurricane Flossie could continue to intensify during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Flossie will move over cooler water later in Wednesday.\u00a0 Hurricane Flossie will start to weaken when it moves over cooler water.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Flossie will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system over Mexico.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer the Flossie toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Flossie will start to move farther away from the coast of southwestern Mexico.\u00a0 Flossie will move south of Baja California on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Bands in the northeastern side of Hurricane Flossie will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to parts of the coast of southwestern Mexico.\u00a0 The heaviest rain will fall in parts of Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Flossie intensified to a major hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico on Tuesday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Hurricane Flossie was located at latitude 18.2\u00b0N and longitude 107.4\u00b0W which put the center about 365 miles (585 km) south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. \u00a0 Flossie [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[422,39,797,569,423,1560,3924,650,568,24,1721,3925,2521],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22536"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=22536"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22536\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22537,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22536\/revisions\/22537"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=22536"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=22536"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=22536"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
