Tropical Storm Dexter passed north of Bermuda on Monday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Dexter was located at latitude 36.8\u00b0N and longitude 65.6\u00b0W which put the center about 315 miles (415 km) north of Bermuda.\u00a0 Dexter was moving toward the northeast at 13 m.p.h. (21 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1002 mb.<\/p>\n
An upper level trough near the east coast of the U.S. was producing strong westerly winds that were blowing toward the top of Tropical Storm Dexter.\u00a0 Those winds were causing strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The wind shear was affecting the structure of Dexter’s circulation.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Dexter.\u00a0 Bands in the western side of Dexter’s circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.<\/p>\n
The strong vertical wind shear and the asymmetrical distribution of thunderstorms were also affecting the distribution of wind speeds in Tropical Storm Dexter.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 90 miles (145 km) in the eastern side of Dexter’s circulation.\u00a0 The winds in the western side of Tropical Storm Dexter were blowing at less than tropical storm force.<\/p>\n
Tropical Storm Dexter will move through an environment unfavorable for intensification of a tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Dexter will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level trough near the east coast of the U.S. will continue to cause strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The strong wind shear will prevent Tropical Storm Dexter from intensifying.\u00a0 Dexter could get stronger when it starts to make a transition to an extratropical cyclone.<\/p>\n
