{"id":23032,"date":"2025-09-04T04:13:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T04:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23032"},"modified":"2025-09-04T04:13:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T04:13:13","slug":"hurricane-lorena-moves-toward-baja-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23032","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Lorena Moves Toward Baja California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Lorena was moving toward Baja California on Wednesday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Lorena was located at latitude 23.4\u00b0N and longitude 113.2\u00b0W which put the center about 110 miles (175 km) south-southwest of Cabo San Lazaro, Mexico.\u00a0 Lorena was moving toward the northwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 981 mb.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Santa Fe to Punta Eugenia, Mexico.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Todos Santos to Sante Fe, Mexico.\u00a0 A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Santa Rosalia to Bahia de Los Angeles, Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Lorena strengthened a little more on Wednesday.\u00a0 The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the center of Lorena&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 However, an eye was not visible on satellite images.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Hurricane Lorena.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Lorena generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the northeast of the hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Hurricane Lorena was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 20 miles (30 km) in the northeastern quadrant of Lorena&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 80 miles (130 km) from the center of Hurricane Lorena.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Lorena will move through an environment that will become unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Lorena will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 25\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southeastern part of an upper level trough that is west of Baja California.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Lorena&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase.\u00a0 The combination of cooler Sea Surface Temperatures and more vertical wind shear will cause Hurricane Lorena to weaken on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Lorena will move around the western end of a high pressure system that is over Mexico.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Lorena toward the north during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 The upper level trough that is west of Baja California will steer Lorena toward the northeast later on Thursday.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Lorena will approach the coast of Baja California between Cabo San Lazaro and Punta Eugenia on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Lorena will weaken to a tropical storm before it reaches the coast of Baja California.\u00a0 Lorena will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to parts of Baja California.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Hurricane Kiko strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale far to the east-southeast of Hawaii.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Hurricane Kiko was located at latitude 13.8\u00b0N and longitude 132.3\u00b0W which put the center about 1560 miles (2510 km) east-southeast of Hilo Hawaii.\u00a0 Kiko was moving toward the west at 9 m.p.h. (15 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 145 m.p.h. (235 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 170 m.p.h.
