{"id":23172,"date":"2025-09-23T18:44:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T18:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23172"},"modified":"2025-09-23T18:44:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T18:44:10","slug":"gabrielle-prompts-hurricane-watch-for-the-azores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23172","title":{"rendered":"Gabrielle Prompts Hurricane Watch for the Azores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The risk posed by Hurricane Gabrielle prompted the issuance of a Hurricane Watch for the Azores on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Hurricane Gabrielle was located at latitude 34.3\u00b0N and longitude 57.5\u00b0W which put the center about 1710 miles (2755 km) west of the Azores.\u00a0 Gabrielle was moving toward the east-northeast at 20 m.p.h. (32 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 130 m.p.h. (210 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 155 m.p.h. (250 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 952 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Watch is in effect for all of the Azores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A circular eye with a diameter of 20 miles (32 km) was at the center of Gabrielle\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Gabrielle\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Gabrielle generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of mass in the upper level was slightly less than the inflow of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 The strong inflow of mass in the lower levels caused the surface pressure to increase gradually.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the circulation around Hurricane Gabrielle did not change much during the past 24 hours.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 40 miles (65 km) from the center of Gabrielle\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (225 km) in the western side of Hurricane Gabrielle.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) in the eastern side of Gabrielle\u2019s circulation.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Gabrielle was 25.1.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 12.9 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 38.0.\u00a0 Hurricane Gabrielle was similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Harvey when Harvey hit Texas in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Gabrielle will move through an environment that will become more unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Gabrielle will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern extent of the upper level westerly winds in the middle latitudes.\u00a0 Those upper level westerly winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase.\u00a0 Hurricane Gabrielle will continue to weaken gradually during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The upper level westerly winds in the middle latitudes will steer Hurricane Gabrielle toward the east during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Gabrielle will reach the Azores on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Gabrielle will bring strong winds and heavy rain to the Azores on Thursday night and Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The risk posed by Hurricane Gabrielle prompted the issuance of a Hurricane Watch for the Azores on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Hurricane Gabrielle was located at latitude 34.3\u00b0N and longitude 57.5\u00b0W which put the center about 1710 miles (2755 km) west of the Azores.\u00a0 Gabrielle was moving toward the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[483,160,318,1658,3982,650],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23172"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23172"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23172\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23173,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23172\/revisions\/23173"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23172"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23172"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23172"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
