(32 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h. (195 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 966 mb.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Bermuda.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Imelda strengthened to Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 15 miles (24 km) was at the center of Imelda&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Imelda.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Imelda generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the north and east of the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the circulation around Hurricane Imelda increased when Imelda strengthened.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 60 miles (95 km) from the center of Imelda&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 230 miles (370 km) from the center of Hurricane Imelda.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Imelda was 16.5.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 19.4 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 34.9.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Imelda will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Imelda will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the eastern side of an upper level trough that is over the eastern U.S.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Imelda\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The moderate vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the wind shear will not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Hurricane Imelda is likely to intensify during the next 24 hours. Imelda could intensify to a major hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>The upper level trough over the eastern U.S. will steer Hurricane Imelda toward the east-northeast during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Imelda will hit Bermuda on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Imelda will bring strong winds and heavy rain to Bermuda.\u00a0 The strong winds could cause electricity outages.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flooding.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, former Hurricane Humberto merged with a front and made a transition to an extratropical cyclone.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of former Hurricane Humberto was located at latitude 37.0\u00b0N and longitude 63.0\u00b0W which put the center about 340 miles (550 km) north-northeast of Bermuda.\u00a0 Humberto was moving toward the east-northeast at 23 m.p.h. (37 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 70 m.p.h. (110 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 85 m.p.h.
