{"id":23541,"date":"2025-11-04T14:17:34","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23541"},"modified":"2025-11-04T14:17:34","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:17:34","slug":"typhoon-kalmaegi-moves-over-the-sulu-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23541","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Kalmaegi Moves over the Sulu Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Kalmaegi moved over the Sulu Sea on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 4:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday the center of Typhoon Kalmaegi was located at latitude 10.5\u00b0N and longitude 121.3\u00b0E which put the center about 130 miles (210 km) east-southeast of Taytay, Philippines.\u00a0 Kalmaegi was moving toward the west at 16 m.p.h. (26 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 985 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Kalmaegi weakened as it moved across the central Philippines on Monday.\u00a0 An eye was no longer visible on satellite images.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were still occurring near the center of Kalmaegi&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were also occurring in bands in the southern half of Typhoon Kalmaegi.\u00a0 Bands in the northern half of Kalmaegi&#8217;s circulation contained fewer thunderstorms.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Kalmaegi still generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the west of the typhoon.\u00a0 However, there was more mass converging in the lower levels of the atmosphere than there was mass diverging in the upper levels.\u00a0 So, the surface pressure was increasing.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the circulation around Typhoon Kalmaegi decreases as Kalmaegi weakened.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Kalmaegi&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 110 miles (170 km) from the center of Typhoon Kalmaegi.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Kalmaegi will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Kalmaegi will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Kalmaegi\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification but the wind shear may not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Typhoon Kalmaegi could start to intensify again during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Kalmaegi will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Kalmaegi toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Typhoon Kalmaegi will pass near northern Palawan in a few hours.\u00a0 Kalmaegi will move over the South China Sea on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Kalmaegi will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to northern Palawan and the Calamian Group of islands.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Depression 32W formed south of the Marianas.\u00a0 At 4:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday the center of Tropical Depression 32W was located at latitude 9.5\u00b0N and longitude 142.7\u00b0E which put the center about 285 miles (460 km) south-southwest of Guam.\u00a0 The tropical depression was moving toward the west at 11 m.p.h. (17 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h.
