{"id":23570,"date":"2025-11-08T21:04:48","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T21:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23570"},"modified":"2025-11-08T21:04:48","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T21:04:48","slug":"typhoon-fung-wong-intensifies-to-equivalent-of-a-major-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23570","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Fung-wong Intensifies to Equivalent of a Major Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Fung-wong intensified to the equivalent of a major hurricane east of the Philippines on Saturday.\u00a0 At 4:00 p.m. EST on Saturday the center of Typhoon Fung-wong was located at latitude 14.0\u00b0N and longitude 125.8\u00b0E which put the center about 190 miles (305 km) east of Daet, Philippines.\u00a0 Fung-wong was moving toward the west-northwest at 23 m.p.h. (37 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 125 m.p.h. (200 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 155 m.p.h. (250 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 949 mb.<\/p>\n<p>A circular eye was present at the center of Fung-wong&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms revolving around the core of Fung-wong&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the core generated strong upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the typhoon.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Typhoon Fung-wong was very large.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 110 miles (175 km) in the northern half of Fung-wong&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 70 miles (110 km) in the southern side of Typhoon Fung-wong.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 375 miles (605 km) in the northern side of Fung-wong&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 230 miles (370 km) in the southern half of Typhoon Fung-wong.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Fung-wong is 23.6.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size index (HSI) is 37.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) 60.9.\u00a0 Typhoon Fung-wong is similar in intensity to Hurricane Katrina when Katrina hit Mississippi in 2005.\u00a0 Fung-wong is larger than Katrina was.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Fung-wong will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Fung-wong will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the middle of an upper level ridge that is east of the Philippines.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the middle of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 There is drier air to the north and west of Typhoon Fung-wong.\u00a0 However, that drier air is not likely to be pulled into the typhoon during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Typhoon Fung-wong could intensify during the next 12 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Fung-wong will move around the southern side of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Fung-wong toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Typhoon Fung-wong will hit northern Luzon in 18 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Fung-wong will be the equivalent of a major hurricane when it reaches Luzon.\u00a0 Fung-wong will bring strong, gusty winds and very heavy rain to Luzon.\u00a0 Heavy rain will cause widespread flash floods.\u00a0 Typhoon Fung-wong could also cause a storm surge of up to 14 fee (4 meters) along portions of the coast of Luzon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Fung-wong intensified to the equivalent of a major hurricane east of the Philippines on Saturday.\u00a0 At 4:00 p.m. EST on Saturday the center of Typhoon Fung-wong was located at latitude 14.0\u00b0N and longitude 125.8\u00b0E which put the center about 190 miles (305 km) east of Daet, Philippines.\u00a0 Fung-wong was moving toward the west-northwest at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[910,2011,1826,650,103,64,4025,911],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23570"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23570"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23570\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23571,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23570\/revisions\/23571"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23570"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23570"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23570"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
