{"id":23586,"date":"2025-11-11T14:58:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T14:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23586"},"modified":"2025-11-11T14:58:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T14:58:21","slug":"fung-wong-weakens-to-a-tropical-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23586","title":{"rendered":"Fung-wong Weakens to a Tropical Storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Typhoon Fung-wong weakened to a tropical storm over the South China Sea southwest of Taiwan on Tuesday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Fung-wong was located at latitude 20.8\u00b0N and longitude 11934\u00b0E which put the center about 165 miles (265 km) southwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.\u00a0 Fung-wong was moving toward the north-northwest at 8 m.p.h. (13 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 990 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Former Typhoon Fung-wong weakened to a tropical storm southwest of Taiwan on Tuesday morning.\u00a0 Drier air from Asia was pulled into the core of Tropical Storm Fung-wong.\u00a0 The drier air caused many of the thunderstorms in Fung-wong to dissipate.\u00a0 The dissipation of the thunderstorms significantly reduced the amount of upper level divergence.\u00a0 Since the upper level divergence pumped less mass away from Tropical Storm Fung-wong, the surface pressure increased.<\/p>\n<p>An upper level ridge over the Western North Pacific Ocean was producing southerly winds that were blowing toward the top of Fung-wong&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds were causing strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The strong vertical wind shear was blowing the upper part of Fung-wong&#8217;s circulation toward the north of the circulation in the lower levels.\u00a0 Many of the bands in Tropical Storm Fung-wong consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Tropical Storm Fung-wong was weakening, the circulation around Fung-wong was still large.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 275 miles (445 km) in the northern side of Fung-wong&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 160 miles (260 km) in the southern half of Tropical Storm Fung-wong.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Fung-wong will move through an environment that will be unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Fung-wong will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level ridge that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean will continue to produce southerly winds that will blow toward the top of Fung-wong\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will continue to cause strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 In addition, the drier air that is already in the circulation around Fung-wong will suppress the formation of new thunderstorms.\u00a0 Strong vertical wind shear and the drier air will cause Tropical Storm Fung-wong to continue to weaken during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Fung-wong will move around the western end of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Fung-wong toward the northeast during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Fung-wong will move across Taiwan during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Fung-wong will bring strong winds and isolated heavy rain to Taiwan.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Fung-wong will move across the southern Ryukyu Islands on Wednesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Typhoon Fung-wong weakened to a tropical storm over the South China Sea southwest of Taiwan on Tuesday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Fung-wong was located at latitude 20.8\u00b0N and longitude 11934\u00b0E which put the center about 165 miles (265 km) southwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.\u00a0 Fung-wong was moving [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[910,1826,1043,194,42,1825,911],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23586"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23586"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23586\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23587,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23586\/revisions\/23587"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23586"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23586"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23586"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
