{"id":23618,"date":"2025-11-21T04:16:52","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T04:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23618"},"modified":"2025-11-21T04:21:49","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T04:21:49","slug":"tropical-cyclone-fina-moves-toward-northern-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23618","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Fina Moves Toward Northern Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina started to move toward the coast of northern Australia on Thursday night.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Thursday the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina was located at latitude 10.4\u00b0S and longitude 132.4\u00b0E which put the center about 185 miles (300 km) northeast of Darwin, Australia and about 70 miles (110 km) north of Minjilang, Australia.\u00a0 Fina was moving toward the west-southwest at 6 m.p.h. (10 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 980 mb.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Dundee Beach to Warruwi, Australia.\u00a0 The Warning includes Darwin, Minjilang and the Cobourg Peninsula.\u00a0 A Warning is also in effect for the Tiwi Islands.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Wadeye to Daly River Mouth.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina strengthened to the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon after it started to move toward the coast of northern Australia on Thursday.\u00a0 The inner end of a rainband wrapped most of the way around the center to Fina&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 A small circular eye appeared to be forming at the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Fina&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Fina generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Fina was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Fina&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 80 miles (130 km) from the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Fina will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the western end of an upper level ridge over northern Australia.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce northerly winds that will blow toward the top of Fina&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The moderate vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the shear may not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fina could continue to intensify during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina will move around the western end of a high pressure system over northern Australia.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Fina toward the southwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina will pass near the northwestern end of the Cobourg Peninsula in 12 hours.\u00a0 The center of Fina could be near the eastern end of Melville Island in 24 hours.\u00a0 Fina could reach Darwin in less than 36 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina will bring strong winds and heavy rain to the coast of the Northern Territory of Australia.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause floods in some locations.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fina could also cause a storm surge of up to 7 feet (2 meters) along parts of the coast of the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Flood Watches are in effect for the North West Coastal Rivers.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina started to move toward the coast of northern Australia on Thursday night.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Thursday the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina was located at latitude 10.4\u00b0S and longitude 132.4\u00b0E which put the center about 185 miles (300 km) northeast of Darwin, Australia and about 70 miles (110 km) north [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[81,48,2],"tags":[622,78,4034,4035,975,2777,4029,2776,4030,83,623,2854,4028,2847,4031],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23618"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23618"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23618\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23620,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23618\/revisions\/23620"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23618"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23618"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23618"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
