(8 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h. (195 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 967 mb.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Cape Hotham to Wadeye, Australia.\u00a0 The Warning includes Darwin.\u00a0 A Warning is also in effect for the western and central Tiwi Islands.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Wadeye to Troughton Island, Australia.\u00a0 The Watch includes Kalumburu.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina brought wind and rain to the area around Darwin, Australia on Saturday.\u00a0 The core of Fina&#8217;s circulation, where the strongest winds were, was passing to the northwest of Darwin.\u00a0 A weather station at the Darwin Airport reported a sustained wind speed of 37 m.p.h. (57 km\/h) and a wind gust to 53 m.p.h. (85 km\/h).\u00a0 The weather station also measure 5.89 inches (149.6 mm) of rain.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina intensified to the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale as it moved over the Timor Sea.\u00a0 A very small eye was present at the center of Fina&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Tropical Cyclone Fina.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Fina generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Fina was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extended out 20 miles (30 km) from the center of Fina\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 75 miles (120 km) from the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Tropical Cyclone Fina was 16.5.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 7.5 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 24.0.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fina was similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Idalia when Idalia hit Florida in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification while it moves over the Timor Sea during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Fina will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0\u00a0 It will move under the western end of an upper level ridge over northern Australia.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce northerly winds that will blow toward the top of Fina\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the wind shear may not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fina could intensify during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Fina could strengthen to the equivalent of a major hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina will move around the western end of a high pressure system over northern Australia.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Fina toward the southwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina will move away from Darwin during the next 24 hours.\u00a0\u00a0 Fina will approach the coast of Western Australia northeast of Kalumburu in 36 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina will continue to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the coast of the Northern Territory of Australia southwest of Darwin.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause floods in some locations.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fina could also cause a storm surge of up to 10 feet (3 meters) along parts of the coast of the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Flood Watches are in effect for the North West Coastal Rivers and the Bonaparte Coastal Rivers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Fina brought wind and rain to Darwin, Australia on Saturday.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina was located at latitude 12.2\u00b0S and longitude 130.4\u00b0E which put the center about 35 miles (55 km) northwest of Darwin, Australia.\u00a0 Fina was moving toward the west-southwest at 5 m.p.h.
