Tropical Cyclone Fina was moving over the Timor Sea on Sunday after it caused wind damage and electricity outages in Darwin.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Sunday the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina was located at latitude 13.7\u00b0S and longitude 128.8\u00b0E which put the center about 155 miles (250 km) west-southwest of Darwin, Australia.\u00a0 Fina was moving toward the southwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 110 m.p.h. (175 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 130 m.p.h. (210 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 960 mb.<\/p>\n
A Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Wadeye, Australia to the Daly River Mouth.\u00a0 A Warning was also in effect for the portion of the coast from the border between the Northern Territory and Western Australia to Kalumburu.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Tropical Cyclone Fina was still a well organized tropical cyclone on Sunday.\u00a0 A small circular eye was visible at the center of Fina’s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Tropical Cyclone Fina.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Fina generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Fina was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extended out 20 miles (30 km) from the center of Fina\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) from the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina.<\/p>\n The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Tropical Cyclone Fina was 19.2.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 7.4 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 26.6.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fina was similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Zeta when Zeta hit Louisiana in 2020.<\/p>\n Tropical Cyclone Fina will move through an environment that will become unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Fina will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the western end of an upper level ridge over northern Australia.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce northerly winds that will blow toward the top of Fina\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the wind shear may not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 However, the circulation around the eastern side of Tropical Cyclone Fina will begin to pull drier air from northwestern Australia into its circulation.\u00a0 The drier air will cause thunderstorms in the eastern side of Fina’s circulation to start to weaken.\u00a0 The effects of the drier air will cause Tropical Cyclone Fina to start to weaken during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n Tropical Cyclone Fina will move around the western end of a high pressure system over northern Australia.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Fina toward the west-southwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Tropical Cyclone Fina will reach the coast of Western Australia near of the King George River Mouth in 24 hours.<\/p>\n Tropical Cyclone Fina will continue to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the coast of the Western Australia northeast of Kalumburu.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause floods in some locations.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fina could also cause a storm surge of up to 7 feet (2 meters) along parts of the coast of the Western Australia.<\/p>\n Flood Watches are in effect for the
