{"id":23663,"date":"2025-11-26T21:31:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T21:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23663"},"modified":"2025-11-26T21:31:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T21:31:10","slug":"koto-intensifies-to-a-typhoon-over-south-china-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23663","title":{"rendered":"Koto Intensifies to a Typhoon Over South China Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Koto intensified to a typhoon over the South China Sea on Wednesday. \u00a0 At 4:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Typhoon Koto was located at latitude 13.2\u00b0N and longitude 114.5\u00b0E which put the center about 475 miles (765 km) east-southeast of Da Nang, Vietnam.\u00a0 Koto was moving toward the northwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 982 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Former Tropical Storm Koto intensified to a typhoon on Wednesday.\u00a0 Thunderstorms continued to develop around the center of Typhoon Koto.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Koto&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Koto generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of wind speeds around Typhoon Koto was asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 30 miles from the center of Koto&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 205 miles (335 km) in the northern side of Koto\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) in the southern side of Typhoon Koto.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Koto will move through an environment that will become unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Koto will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Koto&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase.\u00a0 In addition, Typhoon Koto will move into a region of drier air that is flowing over the western part of the South China Sea.\u00a0 Some of the drier air is likely to get pulled into the western side of Koto&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 More vertical wind shear and the effects of drier air will cause Typhoon Koto to start to weaken during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Koto will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Koto toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Typhoon Koto will move closer to Vietnam.\u00a0 A second high pressure system over China and Southeast Asia that is transporting the drier air over the western part of the South China Sea will impede the progress of Koto later this week.\u00a0 Koto could meander over the South China Sea for several days at the end of the week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Koto intensified to a typhoon over the South China Sea on Wednesday. \u00a0 At 4:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Typhoon Koto was located at latitude 13.2\u00b0N and longitude 114.5\u00b0E which put the center about 475 miles (765 km) east-southeast of Da Nang, Vietnam.\u00a0 Koto was moving toward the northwest [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[924,1649,4042,4051,63,925],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23663"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23663"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23663\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23664,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23663\/revisions\/23664"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23663"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23663"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23663"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
