{"id":23829,"date":"2026-01-07T21:59:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T21:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23829"},"modified":"2026-01-07T21:59:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T21:59:20","slug":"tropical-cyclone-jenna-weakens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23829","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Jenna Weakens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Jenna weakened on Wednesday as it moved over the South Indian Ocean southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 At 4:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Tropical Cyclone Jenna was located at latitude 18.6\u00b0S and longitude 90.9\u00b0E which put the center about 580 miles (940 km) southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 Jenna was moving toward the west-southwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 993 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Jenna weakened steadily on Wednesday as it moved southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 The southwestern part of an upper level ridge produced strong northwesterly winds that blew toward the top of Jenna&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds caused strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The strong upper level winds also blew the tops off of many of the thunderstorms that were part of Tropical Cyclone Jenna.<\/p>\n<p>There were few thunderstorms left in Tropical Cyclone Jenna because of the strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The bands revolving around the center of Jenna&#8217;s circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 There was little upper level divergence.\u00a0 Mass was still converging in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 So, the convergence of mass caused the surface pressure to increase.<\/p>\n<p>The strong vertical wind shear also caused the distribution of wind speeds in Tropical Cyclone Jenna to become more asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 100 miles (160 km) in the southern side of Jenna&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Tropical storm force winds extended out 35 miles (55 km) in the northern side of Tropical Cyclone Jenna.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Jenna will move through an environment very unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Jenna will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 26\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will continue to move under the southwestern part of an upper level ridge that is over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will continue to produce strong northwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Jenna\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will continue to cause strong vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Jenna will continue to weaken because of the strong vertical wind shear.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Jenna will move around the northern side of a high pressure system that is over the South Indian Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Jenna toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Cyclone Jenna will continue to move farther away from the Cocos Islands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Jenna weakened on Wednesday as it moved over the South Indian Ocean southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 At 4:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Tropical Cyclone Jenna was located at latitude 18.6\u00b0S and longitude 90.9\u00b0E which put the center about 580 miles (940 km) southwest of the Cocos Islands.\u00a0 Jenna was [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,2],"tags":[643,67,4074,339,4073],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23829"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23829"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23829\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23830,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23829\/revisions\/23830"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23829"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23829"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23829"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
