{"id":23875,"date":"2026-01-15T14:44:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23875"},"modified":"2026-01-15T14:44:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:44:24","slug":"tropical-storm-nokaen-develops-east-of-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23875","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Nokaen Develops East of the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen developed over the Western North Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines on Thursday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Thursday the center of the Tropical Storm Nokaen was located at latitude 10.2\u00b0N and longitude 128.8\u00b0E which put the center about 220 miles (335 km) east of Dinagat, Philippines.\u00a0 Nokaen was moving toward the northwest at 2 m.p.h. (3 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 998 mb.<\/p>\n<p>A low pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines strengthened on Thursday morning and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Nokaen.<\/p>\n<p>Thunderstorms were occurring near the center of Tropical Storm Nokaen.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were also occurring in bands in the western and northern parts of Nokaen&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Bands in the eastern and southern parts of Tropical Storm Nokaen consisted primarily of showers and thunderstorms.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Nokaen generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of winds speeds in Tropical Storm Nokaen was asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 150 miles (240 km) in the northern half of Nokaen&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 45 miles (75 km) in the southern half of Tropical Storm Nokaen.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Nokaen will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the western end of an upper level ridge that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce southeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Nokaen&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The moderate vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the wind shear may not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Nokaen could intensify slowly during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen will move around the western end of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Nokaen toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Nokaen will move closer to the central Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>Bands in the western side of Nokaen&#8217;s circulation will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to Samar, Cataduanes Island, and southeastern Luzon.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen developed over the Western North Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines on Thursday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Thursday the center of the Tropical Storm Nokaen was located at latitude 10.2\u00b0N and longitude 128.8\u00b0E which put the center about 220 miles (335 km) east of Dinagat, Philippines.\u00a0 Nokaen was moving toward [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[606,1835,2768,103,4083,64,296,4082,607],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23875"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23875"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23875\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23876,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23875\/revisions\/23876"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23875"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23875"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23875"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
