{"id":23891,"date":"2026-01-17T14:15:57","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T14:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23891"},"modified":"2026-01-17T14:15:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T14:15:57","slug":"tropical-storm-nokaen-passes-east-of-luzon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23891","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Nokaen Passes East of Luzon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen was passing just to the east of Luzon on Saturday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday the center of the Tropical Storm Nokaen was located at latitude 15.2\u00b0N and longitude 124.1\u00b0E which put the center about 185 miles (300 km) east-southeast of Casiguran, Philippines.\u00a0 Nokaen was moving toward the northwest at 13 m.p.h. (21 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 993 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen strengthened a little more as it moved east of Luzon on Saturday morning.\u00a0 Even though Nokaen was stronger, the distribution of thunderstorms remained asymmetrical.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western and northern parts of Tropical Storm Nokaen.\u00a0 Bands in the eastern and southern parts of Nokaen&#8217;s circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Nokaen generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Storm Nokaen was interacting with a high pressure system over eastern Asia.\u00a0 The interaction was causing a large area of strong winds in the northwestern quadrant of Nokaen&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 150 miles (240 km) in the northwestern quadrant of Tropical Storm Nokaen.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force only extended out 60 miles (95 km) in the other quadrants of Nokaen&#8217;s circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen will move through an environment that will become unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Nokaen will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the western end of an upper level ridge that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce southeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Nokaen\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Nokaen will start to weaken when the vertical wind shear increases.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen will move around the western end of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Nokaen toward the north during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Tropical Storm Nokaen will remain east of Luzon.<\/p>\n<p>Bands in the western side of Tropical Storm Nokaen will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to parts of Luzon.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Nokaen was passing just to the east of Luzon on Saturday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday the center of the Tropical Storm Nokaen was located at latitude 15.2\u00b0N and longitude 124.1\u00b0E which put the center about 185 miles (300 km) east-southeast of Casiguran, Philippines.\u00a0 Nokaen was moving toward the northwest at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[606,4027,103,4083,64,4082,607],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23891"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23891"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23891\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23892,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23891\/revisions\/23892"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23891"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23891"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23891"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
