{"id":23988,"date":"2026-02-04T14:34:23","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23988"},"modified":"2026-02-04T14:34:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:34:23","slug":"depression-strengthens-to-tropical-storm-penha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=23988","title":{"rendered":"Depression Strengthens to Tropical Storm Penha"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A tropical depression over the Western North Pacific Ocean east of Mindanao strengthened to Tropical Storm Penha on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Penha was located at latitude 8.6\u00b0N and longitude 131.0\u00b0E which put the center about 330 miles (530 km) west of Tandag, Philippines.\u00a0 Penha was moving toward the west at 13 m.p.h. (21 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.<\/p>\n<p>A tropical depression east of Mindanao strengthened on Wednesday morning and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Penha.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Penha was asymmetrical.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the northern and western parts of Penha&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Bands in the southern and eastern parts of Tropical Storm Penha consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Penha generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the north and west of the tropical storm.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease slowly.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Storm Penha was interacting with a large high pressure system that was south of Japan.\u00a0 The interaction with the high pressure system was causing the distribution of wind speeds in Penha to be asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 100 miles (160 km) in the northern side of Tropical Storm Penha.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force only extended out 25 miles (40 km) in the southern half of Penha&#8217;s circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Penha will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Penha will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southwestern part of an upper level ridge over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce southeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Penha\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The moderate vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the wind shear may not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Penha could intensify slowly during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Penha will move around the southern part of the high pressure system that is south of Japan.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Penha toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Penha will reach Mindanao in 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Penha will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to Mindanao and the rest of the southern Philippines.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A tropical depression over the Western North Pacific Ocean east of Mindanao strengthened to Tropical Storm Penha on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Penha was located at latitude 8.6\u00b0N and longitude 131.0\u00b0E which put the center about 330 miles (530 km) west of Tandag, Philippines.\u00a0 Penha was [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[406,68,4095,64,4096,4094,407],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23988"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23988"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23988\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23989,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23988\/revisions\/23989"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23988"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23988"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23988"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
