{"id":24052,"date":"2026-02-14T05:47:05","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T05:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24052"},"modified":"2026-02-14T05:47:05","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T05:47:05","slug":"tropical-cyclone-gezani-clips-mozambique","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24052","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Gezani Clips Mozambique"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The western side of Tropical Cyclone Gezani clipped the coast of Mozambique near Inhambane on Friday night.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Friday the center of Tropical Cyclone Gezani was located at latitude 24.4\u00b0S and longitude 35.8\u00b0E which put the center about 35 miles (55 km) southeast of Inhambane, Mozambique.\u00a0 Gezani was moving toward the south-southwest at 11 m.p.h. (17 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 110 m.p.h. (175 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 130 m.p.h. (210 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 960 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Gezani was the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale when it clipped the coast of Mozambique on Friday night.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 20 miles (32 km) was present at the center of Gezani\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Gezani\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Gezani generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Gezani was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extended out 35 miles (55 km) from the center of Gezani\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 90 miles (145 km) from the center of Tropical Cyclone Gezani.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Tropical Cyclone Gezani was 19.2.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 12.9 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 32.1.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Gezani was similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Sally when Sally hit Alabama in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Gezani will move through an environment that will become less favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Gezani will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the eastern side of an upper level trough that is over South Africa.\u00a0 The upper level trough will produce northwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Gezani&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Gezani is likely to maintain its intensity during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The upper level trough will start to steer Tropical Cyclone Gezani toward the south-southeast during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Cyclone Gezani will start to move away from the coast of central Mozambique on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Bands in the western half of Tropical Cyclone Gezani circulation will continue to bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to the region near Inhambane during the next few hours.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The western side of Tropical Cyclone Gezani clipped the coast of Mozambique near Inhambane on Friday night.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Friday the center of Tropical Cyclone Gezani was located at latitude 24.4\u00b0S and longitude 35.8\u00b0E which put the center about 35 miles (55 km) southeast of Inhambane, Mozambique.\u00a0 Gezani was moving toward the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,2],"tags":[997,4109,650,2445,86,998,4108],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24052"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=24052"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24052\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":24053,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24052\/revisions\/24053"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=24052"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=24052"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=24052"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
