{"id":24356,"date":"2026-05-06T13:30:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T13:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24356"},"modified":"2026-05-06T13:30:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T13:30:13","slug":"depression-strengthens-to-tropical-storm-hagupit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24356","title":{"rendered":"Depression Strengthens to Tropical Storm Hagupit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Depression 05W strengthened to Tropical Storm Hagupit over the Western North Pacific Ocean south of the Marianas on Tuesday night.\u00a0 At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Hagupit was located at latitude 7.4\u00b0N and longitude 146.5\u00b0E which put the center about 435 miles (705 km) south-southeast of Guam.\u00a0 Hagupit was moving toward the west at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1003 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Former Tropical Depression 05W strengthened on Tuesday night and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Hagupit.<\/p>\n<p>Thunderstorms continued to develop near the center of Tropical Storm Hagupit.\u00a0 However, the distribution of thunderstorms around the rest of Hagupit&#8217;s circulation became a little more asymmetrical during the past 12 hours.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were still occurring in bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Hagupit.\u00a0 Bands in the western side of Hagupit&#8217;s circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Hagupit generated some upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.\u00a0 The removal of mass in the upper levels was nearly matched by the inflow of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 So, the surface pressure was not changing much.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of wind speeds in Tropical Storm Hagupit was also asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 100 miles (160 km) in the northeastern quadrant of Hagupit&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The winds in the other parts of Tropical Storm Hagupit were blowing at less than tropical storm force.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Hagupit will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Hagupit will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Hagupit&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the wind shear will not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Hagupit will intensify slowly during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Hagupit could strengthen to a typhoon later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Hagupit will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Hagupit toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Hagupit will pass south of Guam.\u00a0 Hagupit could approach Yap in 48 hours.\u00a0 Hagupit will likely be a tropical storm when it approaches Yap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Depression 05W strengthened to Tropical Storm Hagupit over the Western North Pacific Ocean south of the Marianas on Tuesday night.\u00a0 At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Hagupit was located at latitude 7.4\u00b0N and longitude 146.5\u00b0E which put the center about 435 miles (705 km) south-southeast of Guam.\u00a0 Hagupit [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[434,45,2114,136,2113,435,66],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24356"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=24356"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24356\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":24357,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24356\/revisions\/24357"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=24356"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=24356"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=24356"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
