{"id":24617,"date":"2026-07-01T21:35:25","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T21:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24617"},"modified":"2026-07-01T22:52:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T22:52:38","slug":"depression-strengthens-to-tropical-storm-douglas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24617","title":{"rendered":"Depression Strengthens to Tropical Storm Douglas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Depression 04E strengthened to Tropical Storm Douglas on Wednesday afternoon as it moved over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Baja California.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Douglas was located at latitude 15.7\u00b0N and longitude 127.0\u00b0W which put the center about 1220 miles (1960 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Douglas was moving toward the north at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1003 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Former Tropical Depression 04E strengthened on Wednesday afternoon and the U.S. National Hurricane Center designated the system as Tropical Storm Douglas.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Douglas was asymmetrical.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the southern and eastern parts of Douglas&#8217; circulation.\u00a0 Bands in the northern and western parts of Tropical Storm Douglas consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Douglas generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The strongest winds were occurring in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Douglas.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 90 miles (145 km) in the eastern side of Douglas&#8217; circulation.\u00a0 The winds in the western half of Tropical Storm Douglas were blowing at less than tropical storm force.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Douglas will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Douglas will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the western part of an upper level ridge that is southwest of Baja California.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Douglas&#8217; circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 There is also some drier air north and west of Tropical Storm Douglas.\u00a0 The drier air could limit the development of thunderstorms in those parts of Douglas&#8217; circulation.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Douglas could intensify a little more during the next 24 hours, if the drier air does not get pulled into the center of its circulation.\u00a0 Douglas is likely to move over cooler water by later on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Douglas will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system that is over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Douglas toward the north-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Douglas will remain far to the southwest of Baja California.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Depression 04E strengthened to Tropical Storm Douglas on Wednesday afternoon as it moved over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Baja California.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Douglas was located at latitude 15.7\u00b0N and longitude 127.0\u00b0W which put the center about 1220 miles (1960 km) west-southwest [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[415,39,2079,416,2078],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24617"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=24617"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24617\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":24620,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24617\/revisions\/24620"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=24617"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=24617"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=24617"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
