{"id":24676,"date":"2026-07-10T02:25:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T02:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24676"},"modified":"2026-07-10T02:25:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T02:25:31","slug":"typhoon-bavi-approaches-southern-ryukyu-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24676","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Bavi Approaches Southern Ryukyu Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Bavi was approaching the southern Ryukyu Islands on Thursday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Typhoon Bavi was located at latitude 21.3\u00b0N and longitude 126.9\u00b0E which put the center about 360 miles (580 km) southeast of Ishigakijima, Japan.\u00a0 Bavi was moving toward the northwest at 13 m.p.h. (21 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 105 m.p.h. (165 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 964 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi weakened on Thursday when it moved into a region of drier air that was east of Taiwan.\u00a0 The drier air caused many of the thunderstorms in the northern half of Bavi&#8217;s circulation to dissipate.\u00a0 Bands in the northern side of Typhoon Bavi consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were still occurring in bands in the southern half of Bavi&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Bavi generated less upper level divergence.\u00a0 The removal of mass in the upper levels was less than the convergence of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 So, the surface pressure continued to increase on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The inner end of a rainband was wrapping back around the southern and eastern sides of the center of Typhoon Bavi on Thursday evening.\u00a0 A new small eye appeared to be developing at the center of Bavi&#8217;s circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Typhoon Bavi weakened on Thursday, it continued to be a very large typhoon.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 185 miles (295 km) from the center of Bavi\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 370 miles (595 km) from the center of Typhoon Bavi.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Bavi is 12.7.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 57.5 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 70.2.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi is similar in intensity to Hurricane Sandy when Sandy hit the east coast of the U.S. in 2012.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi is larger than Hurricane Sandy was.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Bavi will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi will continue to move through a region of drier air that is east of Taiwan.\u00a0 The drier air will inhibit intensification, but drier air may have less of an effect on Friday.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi could intensify during the next 24 hours, especially if a new eye and eyewall develop at the center of Bavi&#8217;s circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Bavi toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Typhoon Bavi will reach the southern Ryukyu Islands in 18 hours.\u00a0 The center of Bavi will be near northeastern Taiwan in 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi will bring strong winds and heavy rain to the southern Ryukyu Islands and to Taiwan.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi could cause a storms surge of up to 10 feet (3 meters) along the coast of the southern Ryukyu Islands and northern Taiwan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Bavi was approaching the southern Ryukyu Islands on Thursday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Typhoon Bavi was located at latitude 21.3\u00b0N and longitude 126.9\u00b0E which put the center about 360 miles (580 km) southeast of Ishigakijima, Japan.\u00a0 Bavi was moving toward the northwest at 13 m.p.h.
