{"id":24682,"date":"2026-07-11T04:07:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T04:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24682"},"modified":"2026-07-11T04:07:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T04:07:46","slug":"typhoon-bavi-brings-wind-and-rain-to-ryukyu-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24682","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Bavi Brings Wind and Rain to Ryukyu Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Bavi brought wind and rain to the southern Ryukyu Islands on Friday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Typhoon Bavi was located at latitude 25.6\u00b0N and longitude 124.1\u00b0E which put the center about 165 miles (265 km) east-northeast of Taipei, Taiwan.\u00a0 Bavi was moving toward the north-northwest at 15 m.p.h. (24 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 953 mb.<\/p>\n<p>A weather station in Ishigakijima Island reported at sustained wind speed of 49 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 A weather station in Nakasuji, Japan reported a sustained wind speed of 53 m.p.h. (85 km\/h).<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi strengthened a little as it approached the southern Ryukyu Islands on Friday.\u00a0 More thunderstorms formed near the center of Bavi&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Concentric eyewalls appeared for a time on radar images from the Japan Meteorological Agency.\u00a0 A small inner eye and eyewall was surrounded by a much larger outer eyewall that was a remnant from the last eyewall replacement cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of thunderstorms in Typhoon Bavi continued to be asymmetrical.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were occurring mostly in bands in the southern half of Bavi&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Bands in the northern half of Typhoon Bavi consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Bavi generated more upper level divergence.\u00a0 The removal of more mass caused the surface pressure to decrease on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi continued to be a very large typhoon.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 175 miles (280 km) from the center of Bavi\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 370 miles (595 km) from the center of Typhoon Bavi.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Bavi is 13.9.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 48.2 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 62.1.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi is similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Sandy when Sandy hit the east coast of the U.S. in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi will move through an environment that will be marginally favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Bavi will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi will move through a region of drier air that is near eastern of Chin.a\u00a0 The drier air will inhibit intensification.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi could maintain its intensity during the next 12 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Bavi toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Typhoon Bavi will reach the east coast of China near Wenzhou in 12 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bavi will bring strong winds and heavy rain to Zhejiang.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.\u00a0 Typhoon Bavi could also cause a storm surge of up to 10 feet (3 meters) along parts of the east coast of China.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Bavi brought wind and rain to the southern Ryukyu Islands on Friday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Typhoon Bavi was located at latitude 25.6\u00b0N and longitude 124.1\u00b0E which put the center about 165 miles (265 km) east-northeast of Taipei, Taiwan.\u00a0 Bavi was moving toward the north-northwest at 15 m.p.h.
