{"id":24712,"date":"2026-07-17T21:38:01","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T21:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24712"},"modified":"2026-07-17T21:38:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T21:38:01","slug":"tropical-storm-elida-churns-northwest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24712","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Elida Churns Northwest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Elida churned toward the northwest over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean west of Baja California on Friday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Elida was located at latitude 17.1\u00b0N and longitude 121.9\u00b0E which put the center about 875 miles (1410 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Elida was moving toward the west-northwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 994 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Elida maintained its intensity on Friday.\u00a0 The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the western side of the center of Elida&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 However, the circulation around Elida appeared to pull some drier air into the eastern side of the tropical storm.\u00a0 Thunderstorms in some of the bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Elida weakened.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were still revolving around the center of Elida&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Elida also still generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.\u00a0 The removal of mass in the upper levels was nearly equal to the convergence of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 So, the surface pressure did not change much on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of wind speeds around Tropical Storm Elida was still asymmetrical on Friday.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 195 miles (315 km) in the eastern side of Elida&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force only extended out 105 miles (165 km) in the western side of Tropical Storm Elida.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Elida will move through an environment that will be favorable for intensification for about another 24 hours.\u00a0 Elida will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the middle of an upper level ridge that is over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the middle of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Elida could still intensify to a hurricane during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Elida is likely to start to weaken on Sunday when it moves over cooler water.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Elida will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system that is over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Elida toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Elida will remain far to the west of Baja California.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Elida churned toward the northwest over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean west of Baja California on Friday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Elida was located at latitude 17.1\u00b0N and longitude 121.9\u00b0E which put the center about 875 miles (1410 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[418,39,2127,419,24,2126],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24712"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=24712"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24712\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":24713,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24712\/revisions\/24713"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=24712"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=24712"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=24712"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
