The center of Typhoon Noul hit the coast of China just to the northeast of Hong Kong on Saturday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Typhoon Noul was located at latitude 22.7\u00b0N and longitude 114.8\u00b0E which put the center about 60 miles (95 km) east of Hong Kong.\u00a0 Noul was moving toward the northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h. (195 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 967 mb.<\/p>\n
Typhoon Noul continued to intensify until it made landfall on the coast of China just to the northeast of Hong Kong.\u00a0 Typhoon Noul was the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale at the time it made landfall.<\/p>\n
A circular eye with a diameter of 20 miles (32 km) was at the center of Typhoon Noul when Noul made landfall.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Noul’s circulation.<\/p>\n
The distribution of wind speeds around Typhoon Noul was fairly symmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 40 miles (65 km) from the center of Noul’s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (220 km) from the center of Typhoon Noul.<\/p>\n
The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Noul was 16.5.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 14.6 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 31.1.\u00a0 Typhoon Noul was capable of causing regional serious damage.<\/p>\n
Typhoon Noul will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to eastern Guangdong, southern Fujian, and Jiangxi.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause floods in some locations.\u00a0 Typhoon Noul could cause a storm surge of up to 12 feet (3.6 meters) along parts of the coast of southeastern China.<\/p>\n
Typhoon Noul will move around the western end of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Noul toward the north-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Typhoon Noul will move inland over eastern Guangdong and Jiangxi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
