{"id":24816,"date":"2026-07-28T12:37:49","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T12:37:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24816"},"modified":"2026-07-28T12:37:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T12:37:49","slug":"dolphin-rapidly-intensifies-to-a-typhoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24816","title":{"rendered":"Dolphin Rapidly Intensifies to a Typhoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Dolphin rapidly intensified to a typhoon on Monday night as it moved over the Western North Pacific Ocean southeast of Wake Island.\u00a0 At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Typhoon Dolphin was located at latitude 13.4\u00b0N and longitude 171.2\u00b0E which put the center about 535 miles (860 km) southeast of Wake Island.\u00a0 Dolphin was moving toward the west at 13 m.p.h. (21km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 980 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Former Tropical Storm Dolphin rapidly intensified to a typhoon on Monday night.\u00a0 A very small circular eye formed at the center of Dolphin&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms.\u00a0 The strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms revolved around the core of Typhoon Dolphin.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Dolphin generated strong upper level divergence that pumped large amounts of mass from the typhoon.\u00a0 The removal of large amounts of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Typhoon Dolphin was small.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 20 miles (30 km) from the center of Dolphin&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 80 miles (130 km) from the center of Typhoon Dolphin.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Dolphin will move through an environment that will be very favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Dolphin will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the middle of an upper level ridge that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the middle of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Dolphin will intensify during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Dolphin is likely to continue to intensify rapidly during the next few hours.\u00a0 Typhoon Dolphin is likely to strengthen to the equivalent of a major hurricane later today.\u00a0 Dolphin is likely to intensify to the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale by Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Dolphin will move around the southern side of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Dolphin toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Typhoon Dolphin will pass be south of Wake Island on Wednesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Dolphin rapidly intensified to a typhoon on Monday night as it moved over the Western North Pacific Ocean southeast of Wake Island.\u00a0 At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Typhoon Dolphin was located at latitude 13.4\u00b0N and longitude 171.2\u00b0E which put the center about 535 miles (860 km) southeast of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[476,2240,4185,80,478],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24816"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=24816"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24816\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":24817,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24816\/revisions\/24817"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=24816"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=24816"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=24816"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
